5.0 out of 5 stars A Different Perspective
I was surprised by the words from the reader from Palo Alto, and wanted to give my own perspective (I am an older reader) about this book. I did not find Carly Martin to be a damsel in distress at all. The hero did save her physically once, in the end, but it seemed to me that she spent the book trying to save him emotionally, in my belief a harder job. I do agree...

1.0 out of 5 stars Insulting to women
This book's main female character Carly Martin is so unbelievably lacking in mental acuity and understanding of what is going on around her that her character is almost insulting to women who do not live in a dreamland with rose tined glasses on. The plot is totally predictable and is always portraying Carly as the "innocent victim" who needs to be rescued by Max who is...

I do agree that she has a way of seeing the world through rose-colored glasses, and has a tendency to trust others too much, which caused her to make some foolish mistakes. This did not bother me, because I have never liked "perfect" heroines, as I find them admirable but not believable. Carly Martin's flaws caused problems for her, but they also balanced and explained her resilience and her ability to provide the steady love that finally broke through the hero's defenses. Rather than insulting women, I thought that this book was a lovely tribute to the strength of family love and a woman's heart.

4.0 out of 5 stars solid relationship drama, November 7, 2003
This review is from: Trust Me (Mass Market Paperback)
Max Giordano accuses veterinarian Carly Martin of fleecing an old man, his grandfather Henry. His accusations shock her, but not as much as when he informs her that Henry lies in a coma after a near death fall. Max states that Henry named her as trustee to his 23 animals and the mansion if she converts it into a clinic as they once discussed. Carly tells Max he was never there for Henry whom he never met and she often visited. Carly thinks back in time to when she met Henry. He asked for a house call to check out his ailing raccoon. They became friends and she comes over once a week to check the animals and to chat.

Max begins to wonder if he misjudged Carly. She seems nice and innocent and he is so attracted to her yet new evidence surfaces that prove that someone tried to murder Henry. Carly is the obvious suspect as she has motive (inheritance) and opportunity (her vehicle at the scene).

Though the heroine is too perfect and the lead male becomes irritating at times with his "J'accuse" mentality, readers will like both of them. The story line is fun to follow as Max cannot believe that Carly has no hidden agenda when it comes to Henry. Melanie Craft lives up to her surname as she provides a solid relationship tale with a touch of suspense at the end that sub-genre readers will enjoy especially those who value the canine caper crowd.

5.0 out of 5 stars NEW AUTHOR - EXCELLENT, November 11, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Trust Me (Mass Market Paperback)
This is the first book that I have read by Melanie Craft and I was very impressed. Her use of animals in this book is very touching and the human characters are fascinating. There is humor, love, and mystery - all necessary ingredients in a good book. It is a fun read that I would highly recommend it. The fact that the royalties from this book go to the Mercer Clinic (provides free veterinary care to the companion animals of the homeless) is admirable. I look forward to more books from this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Two Thumbs Up!, October 23, 2003

I Never read romances. Ever. But I read this one, and I loved it. I was captivated from the first page and didn't put it down until 4:00 in the morning.

First of all, I have to disagree with the reviewer from Publishers Weekly. Although the book may have tended toward the drama side of romance I cannot understand why the said the plot was bare-boned. From my standpoint--that of a clinical psychologist--it was an intricately woven (but easy to follow and uncontrived) plot about two people trying their best to love each other under very trying circumstances. The story had enough chemistry to involve me, and I sincerely wanted to know the characters.

Moreover, Melanie writes with a light and delicate touch that is truly refreshing. And her humor does not get lost in this one either. Some of the scenes are absolutely hillarious...

I usually don't read this kind of book, but I WILL be reading Melanie Craft's next one for sure. I guess I do read romance novels. Sometimes.

4.0 out of 5 stars sweet, modern, fresh romance., November 6, 2003

it was a quick read, but very uplifting and sweet. made me dream a little... I liked the humor and the animals. I hate romances that take themselves too seriously. Well, actually I hate people who take themselves too seriously. Life is short! Enjoy it while you're here! Relax a little, and do so with this great book!

5.0 out of 5 stars If you ARE a fan of the genre, check this book out!, November 4, 2003

Another FUN book from Craft! I loved watching Carly and Max fall in love before they even knew what was happening...I can relate because I was in denial about my first real love (and now husband!). I think that's what I like about Melanie Craft's books the most...they portray female characters that I can relate to--feminine, forgiving, sometimes naive--but also women with a strong sense of self and sexiness. If you are a romance fan, I promise you'll burn through this one and finish with a smile on your face! If you aren't a romance fan...hmmm...then why are you reading these types of books?

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it! Read it straight through, October 25, 2003

This review is from: Trust Me (Mass Market Paperback)
It only took me a couple of hours to get through this book. It was a quick read, but I totally loved the characters, and I finished the story with a great feeling. Max Giordano is a sexy hero (if you like the dark-and-brooding-with-a-heart-of-gold type, and I do...) Watching him loosen up and find his sense of humor is really fun. There is a light but engrossing suspense subplot, and some very funny humor scenes that made me want more. I look forward to this new author's next book!
(I posted this review earlier, but it never showed up. Sorry if this is a duplicate!)

I was sucked into the story instantly in the beginning, stimulated and suspended throghout the middle, and surprised by the ending, I can't wait to read what's coming next from this great new author.

5.0 out of 5 stars made me smile! Recommended., December 6, 2003

This review is from: Trust Me (Mass Market Paperback)
I bought this because I read the author's first book last summer and liked it a lot. This one is longer, and it was a great read! I didn't think it was light, like some other readers did. The hero had a troubled past with an alcoholic mother and foster homes, which he overcame to become a successful businessman. My favorite subplot was the section about the homeless teenager Edie, and how the hero uses his own experience to talk sense to her when the heroine can't. Carly (the heroine) was very nice (more than I would be!!!) but she had a strength in dealing with the hero that made me respect her and really believe that love can win in the end. Parts of this book like Carly's crazy family, and the stories about the animals and their personalities, made me laugh! I really liked this book a lot. People who want a tough sassy heroine probably won't, but it made me happy.
