This movie is considered the best Hal Hartley ever, even if some Hal Hartley aficionados may prefer Surviving Desire or Simple Men, But TRUST is the movie that grabs even non fans. As why it is not released in the US is hard to understand. I'm from the UK and Have to buy low quality region 1 DVDs as they are not released in the UK. this one is interesting as it is an Australian PAL import, so I get the better quality video. If you are a US Resident, do not worry, PAL video is better, each frame of film equals a frame of video, it runs at 25 frames per second and it has more pixels per frame, so you are watching a more film like experience. Regions on DVDs are just another bad idea from the Hollywood studios, but 90% of european DVD players are region free and if you look for your DVD model on the web, I am sure you will find a code to "region Free" it. as why the rights owner doesn't release all Hal Hartley movies in all countries, it is another story.

SO CLOSE AND YET, SO FAR!!!!,
This review is from: Trust [ NON-USA FORMAT, PAL, Reg.4 Import - Australia ] (DVD)
WHY did they release this in region 4?!?!? Was this a smash hit in Australia!?! This excellent film has a huge cult following here in the US. Hal Hartley is a wonderful filmmaker. Martin Donovan is one of the most underrated actors of our time. This wonderfully quirky movie NEEDS to be released on DVD for AMERICANS!! REGION 1!! NOW!!!!

Awaiting a North American DVD release...,

I have been waiting for a North American release of this film since my purchased VHS copy was misappropriated.
This is my favourite Hartley work and I really would like to own it, so someone get on this and get us this in a version we can view! (p.s. my rating is based on the movie itself, as obviously I have no idea what features this release may have).

Ditto to the other reviewer's sentiments - this is a great movie that should be released in USA format.

My God! I can't begin to tell you how much I loved this movie!!
This has to be one of the most original and thoughtful semi-serious-funny-romantic/non-romantic movie I've ever seen and it stands out in it's originality and feel to anything that I can recall that came before it and after it. Hollywood sure doesn't have what it takes to release a movie such as this anymore. This was the first movie I became aquainted or rather introduced to both Martin Donovan and Ms. Shelley and Donovan's portrayal of the aptly named "Matthew Slaughter" has stuck in my mind ever since I first saw this movie. Yeah I was happy to finally see him again in movies such as "Pipe Dream" and most recently "Saved!" but Matthew Slaughter has lived on in my imagination now for God knows how long. Can't help it, whenever I think of Martin Donvoan, I got to think of Matthew, plus Adrienne Shelley's "Maria" is another of the standout characters that has affected me. Love the film, love the soundtrack, and you wouldn't believe how long I've searched both far and wide on the net to try to find the music to this film, but it's next as impossible to finding the actual film itself. Why in God's name is this movie released only for a region 4 and not able to be viewed here in the US? Who the hell makes these decisions anyway? Don't they know this film is loved and respected greatly here in America? As for me I have no proof ofcourse but I chalk things like this up to Anti-American bias. That's got to be the reason why these things just do not show up here and yet get released around the rest of the world. Please put a stop to this madness and release the movie HERE! in America! and stop screwing around please if you will. Geez! Too much is too much. I get the message already, stop withholding from us! Peace, everyone.

Easily, the best Hal Hartley film so far!,

The whiz bang script, the bittersweet comedy mixed in with the tension the characters brought out of each other - 'We all affect each other in one way or another by simply being in each other's lives!' I can still remember the movie after seeing it 3 times more than 10 years ago! This is another advantage of living outside the US, you get these gems on DVD which for some unknown reason prevent them from being released in the US! One can take advantage of the two markets! Incidentally most DVD players sold in Australia are ZONE FREE! So guys, you might want to take the effort and find the codes to make your DVD players ZONE FREE!

But I can't.. because I won't be able to watch it here in the US. Won't someone do something about this EXCELLENT MOVIE not being formatted for US DVD?
Incidentaly-- when RICHARD BUCKNER: THE MOVIE! gets made, Martin Donovan should play Buck.

"Inventive film experiment...",

When student Maria tells her parents that she is pregnant it leads to her father dying of an heart-attack and herself being thrown out of the house. Coincidentally she meets electro-genius Matthew that lives with his despot of a father, and a peculiar romance arises.Hal Hartley`s second feature film after his directorial debut "The Unbelievable Truth" (1989), is a surreal independent film about two loners from the working-class who are entangled in a whimsical though adorable romance without knowing that they are destined for each other. Compounded by witty and overlapping dialog, paradox situations and archetype characters, Hal Hartley creates a colorful and fabulous universe that describes life's irony, fragility, triviality, ambiguity and harmony in a comical, sophisticated and enriching way, and composes his minimalistic style with finely structured narrative, stylish photography, good music, costumes of great contrasts, innovating cinematography and rare moods. Hal Hartley`s individualistic film style is characterized by fertile acting, detailed depictions of milieu, frequent close-ups, alternate perspectives and short takes, that in interaction with the talkative scripts fast dialog increases the films progression. "Trust" is an inventive film experiment about tricky family relations and people`s need to be seen, heard and believed.

If you like John Waters films (particularly "Female Trouble" and "Pink Flamingos") but were disappointed that they didn't quite clear the hurdle to being funny, then "Trust" is for you.
"Trust" is the follow-on to "The Unbelievable Truth," and features many of the same actors and themes. "The Unbelevable Truth," however, is a screwball romantic comedy, while "Trust" is flat-out black humor. If you're planning to watch both, watch "The Unbelievable Truth" first. I spent the first half of "Trust" laughing, but wondering whether Hal Hartley intended it to be funny. By the end, it becomes clear that he did; this is one very funny film. |
