Book Description

October 2004
It was a time of great adventure, when London merchants looked westward for profits and Puritans looked westward for freedom. None tested the boundaries of civil and religious obedience more than Roger Williams. Minister, statesman, explorer, and champion of religious liberty, Roger Williams was the consummate man for these daring times. In Trust and Treachery, authors Linda Kraeger and Joe Barnhart take readers inside the life and times of Roger Williams with a literary sense of immediacy a typical biography could never capture.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Colony Leader for Today's America, July 28, 2005
This review is from: Trust And Treachery: A Historical Novel Of Roger Williams In America (Paperback)
TRUST AND TREACHERY creates a fascinating picture of Roger Williams and colonial America, blending together history and fiction. Amidst political pressures from the Old World, Puritan doctrine and the perils of living in a new land, Roger Williams is determined to pursue his vision of a new world with religious freedom, separation of church and state, and a government for all people. Friend of the natives, he establishes the Providence settlement, becoming the leader of the Rhode Island colony, while perceiving a new way of thinking that embraces spiritual and ethical integrity.

An important work, the book is both absorbing and informative. Authors Linda Kraeger and Joe Barnhart make history come alive to this reader, with issues relevant to all people in our world today.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fiction Makes History Realistic, June 21, 2005
This review is from: Trust And Treachery: A Historical Novel Of Roger Williams In America (Paperback)
A fast read that makes history zing with real adventures and personalities! The winsome Roger Williams lives among the Native Americans and fights for their human rights. He persistently faces possible imprisonment or execution by the magistrates who insist that everyone believe exactly as they do. Despite Roger's being a Puritan minister, he believes that the magistrates commit "soul rape" when they use the government to force certain beliefs on people.

I thoroughly enjoyed Mary's character, and I did not want to stop reading about the married couple who founded Rhode Island. But the surprise ending gave me hope that the authors will write more about Roger's and Mary's adventures.
