The author almost shouts in your face Caffeine is a deadly substance that can easily kill you. To support it she uses authors and researchers who don't have nor will have soon conclusive evidences that there is something more than higher risk for this or that to happen to you. I guess that whatever you eat or drink may put at higher risk for some unpleasant health problem.

If you drink more than 1-2 cups of coffee per day then the advice is at least to reduce it because the risk is getting significant. Otherwise, the author does NOT present any studies that support the presumption that a cup of coffee even if you drink it every day will have a devastating effect on your health. Kushner's book mostly follows historical and neurological approach to caffeine. It was not very interesting to read who, when and what has to do with coffee and caffeine through out the history.

That was followed by an aggressive propaganda to forget about coffee once and forever. Everyone should know that moderation is very important and going overboard regardless of substance or activity will be bad for you. It is good that she raises awareness that huge consumption of caffeine is not good for your health but you definitely don't need to go through 200 pages just to come up with the same conclusion. I don't see something very significant or new in this book to justify many people all over this site to recommend it. This overly zealous marketing without any care for relevancy reminds me of her overly zealous efforts to convince you immediately to stop drinking coffee. I cannot support any of these 2 things.

To be honest, I really did not believe to get such excellent results from reading this book. I had hoped for a modest improvement. For 22 years I suffered from acid reflux disease and persistent heartburn. I took acid inhibitors and chewed antacids by the boxful.

At times, the burning sensation was so bad that I had trouble sleeping. It was especially difficult to handle during long commutes home from work; being hungry and tired led to carsickness and nausea, on top of the heartburn.

It was difficult to give up some of my favorite highly-caffeinated beverages and acidic things like tomatoes, but I knew if I didn't, I'd suffer for it later that day. After suffering with this condition for so many years, I didn't expect a miracle. Call me a skeptic.

My doctor suggested that removing caffeine, especially coffee, tea, and soft drinks from my diet might help the problem. He recommended this book to help provide me an insight about my caffeine dependency.

I had been a long-time coffee drinker, morning and afternoon, so I cut down on coffee slowly to avoid the nasty side effects such as headaches. Eventually I was able to virtually eliminate caffeine and acidic beverages from my diet.

Much to my surprise after switching from coffee to a coffee substitute recommended in this book, my problem is about 95% improved. I imagine in about several weeks I should not have any problems at all.

I found that not only did the heartburn clear up and my stomach settle down, but I was able to handle periods of hunger without overwhelming acidic, nauseated feelings.

I no longer use some of the medications I regularly took. I sleep better and my commutes are much more pleasant. In fact, I feel so good that I rarely miss my old beverages at all! For me, this book was simply priceless!

1.0 out of 5 stars Book is NOT My Cup of TEA...or COFFEE, October 12, 2006
This review is from: Truth About Caffeine (Paperback)
I did not like the tone of this book at all. I found it bias and condescending and I am asking for a refund.

The important word to remember while reading Kushner's book about CAFFEINE is the word "CAN" ...CAFFEINE "CAN" effect the heart of a new born child (what is the % of births that studies prove that statement? Nope...not in the book.)

CAFFEINE "CAN" be the sole cause of a migrane...but Kushner writes Caffeine causes migraines... (again in what % of headache patients studied no longer have their headaches due to removing just the caffeine?...What % of the headache patients studied no longer have their headaches by eliminating another single food from the diet or by using other interventions?) Nope..not in the book.

The text points out that caffeine is THE CAUSE of many ailments, simply because a proven relationship exists between caffeine and the symptom...such as caffeine and a rise in cortisol...or caffeine and a rise in blood pressure,etc...

...and that may not be TRUE for imbibing ANY AMOUNT of caffeine for ALL HUMAN BEINGS and each and every symptom she mentions in the book.

I am in complete agreement that if you drink a lethal poison, you will indeed suffer the serious/fatal consequences soon...

...If you have a cup of coffee, the book frightened me to believe that "poison" and "caffeine" are synonyms.

There is no denying that Kushner clearly brings the awareness of a variety of caffeine's serious/fatal consequences...(what she leaves out is)...that you may NOT suffer from at all.

The book is not objective in the presentation of many of the facts and that is the main reason I can not recommend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Kickin the habit, January 3, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I was in the process of kicking the soda habit anyway and I wanted to understand a bit more about what affect caffeine has on our bodies. As a younger person I drank allot of soda as I have grown older I developed a tolerance and a need to have soda with every meal and as a replacement for anything else to drink. I am trying to become healthier now; working out and getting in shape and this book really puts a fine point on how caffeine depletes your body of vitamins and minerals as well as the fluids that you need to keep going. Based on the book I would say that caffeine is a part of my life that I can live without and for young people in general with all the different high caffeine drinks out there to choose from after reading this book you may want to think twice about taking your life into your own hands.

5.0 out of 5 stars The reasonable warning to all, March 4, 2010
I am not a coffee lover. Since it keeps me from sleeping, I only drink it when I need more concentration or I have a overnight work to do. I have been always curious about the mechanism how caffeine works in my nervous system. So, I came to read this book, also to do my research on caffeine related health problems. Right after finishing the book, surprisingly, I kind of felt the initiative to share the information which the book aims to tell with everyone aroud me. Many health related problems, especially those with women, have somehting to do with caffeine. It disturbs our central nervous system and the overdose of caffeine in any forms can result in the lethal diseases like heart disease and cancer. Overwhelming scientific researches on caffeine's danger in the book supports the fact. The book tells me how and why overdose of caffeine harm the human physical and mental health and kindly tells the remedy for that. Also giving the alternatives of caffeine and this book helps us to kick the caffeine habit. It is truly worth to read and recommend to others for our own health.

3.0 out of 5 stars Why I'd recommend this one, July 12, 2008
By
This review is from: The Truth About Caffeine (Paperback)
I just got through talking to a local Poison Control director for research. Why? Because caffeine poisoning and reactions and concerns about caffeine have prompted many parents, teens and others to call these centers with symptoms that go beyond the usual jittery nerves and buzz of normal caffeine drinkers.

To be honest, I enjoy a daily cup of coffee as much as many people. I'm not a purist and I haven't sworn off caffeine or drinks that contain it. But the scary reality is also that products like potato chips, breath mints and some energy drinks contain as much caffeine as 2 cups of coffee! Potato chips?! Yes, you read that right.

Now imagine this: an unwitting teen or child or even a toddler chugs an energy drink or swallows some breath mints, following that with those high energy potato chips. Without eating or drinking another thing, that person could have high levels of caffeine in his system. With recent reports linking caffeine to higher rates of miscarriage, perhaps it is time to think about what caffeine can do to developing teens and children.

There is no regulation of these products. This book can tell you a bit more about the dangers of caffeine and how and why people might want to think about which foods and drinks and candies contain caffeine.

Again, I'm no purist. But the facts about poison control centers and increased caffeine poisonings are real. People are reacting to caffeine more often. I don't know if they are INTENTIONALLY taking in large amounts of caffeine or simply don't realize that some over the counter meds, breath mints, jelly beans, energy drinks and..yes. even potato chips can contain caffeine. But I tend to think that increased awareness is a good thing. Now you know.

This book will reveal what you can do about the amount of caffeine you injest, how to go through caffeine withdrawal or cut back (if you want)...and more.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Book & Confessions of a Caffeine Addict 5 Stars, July 28, 2011
I read Confessions of a Caffeine Addict by Marina Kushner and it covers 40 individual stories from anonymous abusers of caffeine but the Truth About Caffeine sealed the deal. I've quit coffee many times since I first got addicted to it when I was 16. I've probably quit over a dozen times, usually doing it cold turkey. But after about a month of not having a drop of caffeine, I decide that it will be ok to have a cup. Just one cup. But then inevitably a few weeks later I've gotten into having several cups of coffee a day. I hate that it's the first thing I think about!

And today I got an hour massage, my muscles are always hurting me. My massage therapist suggested I get this book and try experimenting with quitting coffee again to see if my muscles relax. I'm in constant physical pain and I know that the coffee is making it worse, and probably even causing it. I haven't slept right in months. I'm done with caffeine. I know thats easy to say right now. Tomorrow I'm going have a severe headache that will slowly subside over the course of a week or so...I've done this so many times I can't believe I let myself get addicted to coffee again. This will be the last time I go through caffeine withdrawal!

5.0 out of 5 stars This is THE best book on Caffeine., August 5, 2007
I like this book so much, I've bought copies for my friends -- something I've never done before. This was the only book I found that had the most up-to-date research on caffeine. The author explains everything in detail and points out dozens of things I've never suspected.

I have been trying to give up caffeine, in the form of coffee and diet coke, for years but was unsuccessful. But I knew I had to do it after I read how caffeine was exhausting my adrenal glands and not allowing to have a restful night's sleep.

When I finally quit the withdrawal symptoms made me feel exhausted, depressed and had a foggy brain for the first few days but now I feel great.I wake up feeling refreshed without having to drink coffee. The money I'm saving alone by not purchasing coffee at "Fourbucks" daily is incentive enough.

I highly recommend this book. It is definitely worth reading if your looking to gain more insights into the effects of caffeine.

5.0 out of 5 stars I had no idea that caffeine was soooo dangerous!, August 4, 2007
I just wanted to share my views on this great book. I had no idea that caffeine was so dangerous and that my seemingly innocent morning cup of coffee was really harming me!

I started drinking coffee when I was in high school and at the time it was kind of like a rite of passage into adulthood. My parents didn't see anything wrong with it. Later on, the coffee, sodas, and candy I ate in college to perk me up added to a huge consumption of caffeine. No wonder I had trouble sleeping at night. For years, I couldn't fully "wake up" unless I had that first cup of coffee.

My cardiologist highly recommended your book. What an eye-opener! I learned that caffeine is a culprit behind a lot of illnesses such as heart disease, high blood pressure, and cancer, and also anxiety and depression. Until I read this book, I didn't know that when I buy products that are labeled "decaf" or "caffeine-free", they might still actually have some amount of caffeine in them. This book helped me to become a more cautious label-reader and more discriminating shopper.

This book also gave me helpful advice on cutting down and eliminating caffeine from my diet. Also, the tips on more healthy food sources and better nutritional choices were very helpful.
