This review is from: The Truth About Harvard: A Behind the Scenes Look at Admissions and Life on Campus (College Admissions Guides) (Paperback)
This book told me EXACTLY what I wanted to know. I had an impression that Harvard's reputation was so internationally impressive to people who were not alumni that it would attract a student body of careerists and those hungry for elitism. Well, it doesn't sound that bad from this book but this is definitely a work towards future payoffs school and not a school spirit school. But Harvard sounds so well run that it's not about alumni connections but the school taking really good care of its students past and present. Also worth knowing is that the students tend to be emotionally and financially well fed so kids who have had abusive parents or grew up impoverished despite having intellectual ability may feel isolated. But I think everyone who gets all A's should apply to Harvard and see if they will get in since the admissions process is needs-blind although legacies are a tie-breaker. The school's reputation is basically international kevlar - like a law degree - if you have it in your pocket, you basically at least turn the Machiavellian point of the sword away from you if not outward from you. Even though this book was written a few years ago, I didn't feel that I had made a bad purchase.
