This review is from: The Truth About Hiring the Best (Paperback)
"The Truth About Hiring The Best" by employment strategist and consultant Cathy Fyock is organized into major sections dedicated to instructing human resource personnel and business managers on how to identify the best and most qualified candidates for hire; how to go about recruiting such employees; how to conduct the job interview; detailing the selection process in filling a vacancy; the use (and limitations) of panels, multiple interviews, background checks, tests, and other 'tools of the trade' in screening applicants and recruits; evaluating candidates and making effective offers of employment Showcasing fifty-three proven hiring principles, as well as numerous 'user friendly' techniques for recruiting the best employees as possible, "The Truth About Hiring The Best" should be considered as essential reading for anyone charged with the responsibility of recruiting and hiring employees for any local, regional, national, or international business.

Easier to stay out than to get out,

This review is from: The Truth About Hiring the Best (Paperback)
That's Mark Twain and his observation is dead on when it comes to hiring the right person for the right job at the right time. Fyock challanges convention and some of her advice may make yhou feel uncomfortable: he just as honest in the hiring process about the job's downside as the job's upside;always hore the smartest person applying; use personality testing and, yes, even handwriting anlysis to get the best person(as long as you are not using them consistent with the ADA).; describe a situation the applicant night encounter and ask how she would handle it. She gives good tips on conducting the hiring process and keeping it legal(I practice employment law for employers) with tips on how to steer an interview back to the facts when an applicant wants to veer off into territory you don't need to know about, such as a disbility or age or other protected status. The book is divided into 52 tips, each just a few pages long. They are guidelines to get you thinking, not rules to blindly adhere to. Just the way a good business book should be.

Couldn't beat my price. Used it in a management class for research. It was a bit general and generic, but still serves as a reference.

For better or worse, the typical hiring manager today just doesn't have time to slog through a thick book full of highly detailed advice. That's why this book is so great - the information is easy to absorb and gets right to the point. Having read other books by Cathy Fyock, I know that she is a thoroughly competent HR professional with years of practical experience as a recruiter long before she became a consultant and author. This latest book is her best. It's good for someone new to interviewing and hiring and also helpful for the experienced people, simply to help them brush up on the basics and get some current advice on the recruitment and interviewing scene today.

The Truth About "The Truth About Hiring the Best",

This review is from: The Truth About Hiring the Best (Paperback)
This book makes a good, but somewhat surprising (to me at least, but I'm not an HR person) argument that you are often better off hiring people who are not actually looking for a job. The book then goes into some detail about where to find such people and how to get them. Other than that, most of the "truths" seem to be hiring basics, i.e. what to do (and what not to do) when looking for and interviewing people. Much of this may be common sense for HR professionals, but it's just perfect for someone (like me) who doesn't have much experience in the area.

Misleading title,

This review is from: The Truth About Managing Effectively (Collection) (Kindle Edition)
The book is titled "The truth about managing effectively". It would have been great if it had anything to do with management. I started reading the first couple of chapters waiting to read on how to manage but all i read was how to hire and interview people. I was so bored with it that I stopped reading it. If you want some insight on what to look for when hiring it might work. If you are looking for content on managing as the title reflects then don't waste your time.
