1.0 out of 5 stars Yuck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This may be funny to those, "play in the mud" little boys who think anything gross is funny, but in general, who on earth would want to read about poop? It's discusting!

I do not think this book would be an appropiate gift to get anyone!

It's got just the right blend of humor, straightforward information, and gee-whiz facts. (Did you know that the ancient Romans used pigeon poop to bleach their hair? Me neither!) The author does a fantastic job of explaining the science behind a topic that (like it or not) is of great interest to most kids. Not to mention a good many adults.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Science, May 16, 2005

The title is self-explanatory, and don't sniff and turn away from this one. (Pardon the pun.) It makes for fascinating reading even for the most fastidious reader. Although her touch is light, and it's impossible to read the book without grinning, Susan never goes for the cheap shot. She chuckles without smirking. Chapter headings include: Useful Poop, History of the Toilet Parts 1 and 2, Dung Dispatch, and Poop Power. Having trouble getting third or fourth graders to read a book? Put this one on the table and see how long it takes before a group of kids (probably boys) are gathered around absorbing scientific information.

5.0 out of 5 stars Poopalicious, October 27, 2004
This review is from: The Truth about Poop (Hardcover)
Goodman's witty prose raises the subject matter from the dregs of social life to a subject worthy for consideration. The book is funny and wry- and kids will beg to be read a page of it aloud as a reward system (works great in the classroom!) Chock full of mind-blowing facts, Goodman explores her subject from the cool to the gross to the downright bizarre. "There was life before toilet paper, and much of it wasn't pretty." The illustrations are an asset to the text, which is dense with fact but layered with enough levity and wonderment to appeal to the child scientist in all of us. A must-buy for all classrooms and libraries, and any home where parents speak frankly about how bodies work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Bathroom Reading !, June 8, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: The Truth about Poop (Hardcover)
The Truth About Poop is filled with just the right balance of factual
information and humor. It is listed as a book for ages 9 and up and,
while it no doubt would appeal to even younger readers (thanks to the
ageless zaniness of Elwood Smith's humorous illustrations), it will
definitely be a hit with older kids, right on up to full-blown adults
of any age.

The book is filled with oddball facts about animals and insects that
use poop as disguise, temperature control and sexual attraction. The
history of the modern toilet is covered (not with a terry cloth cover,
however) along with other inventive ways humans have found to dispose
of and use their solid bodily waste.

Many books of this ilk gravitate to gross jokes. However, Susan Goodman
and Elwood Smith have used a higher grade of humor and good taste to
create this wonderful book on a topic that is often avoided or merely
joked about.

A super pooper gift for anyone's bathroom.

Three cheers for this author for writing so humorously, informatively, and in a very, ah, down to earth fashion about the subject that most interests kids!

4.0 out of 5 stars 'It's time to take poop out of the closet.', September 14, 2006
This review is from: The Truth about Poop (Hardcover)
This is an educational read about pooping. It includes facts like, "A skipper caterpillar is just an inch and a half long, but it can Shoot It's Poop a distance of six feet" and other fun facts about many different animals. The book also discusses the history of the toilet, the abc's of elimination, and the many uses for poop. Cute character type illustrations. Funny facts.

5.0 out of 5 stars My little guy LOVES this book!, January 30, 2011

"The Truth About Poop" & "Gee Whiz! It's all About Pee"

First I bought "The Truth About Poop" for my almost-six-year-old boy. He LOVES it. He wants me to read it to him all the time. I followed up the purchase with "Gee Whiz! It's all About Pee" and it's another hit!

Since my little guy is almost six, I'm doing most of the reading, for now, but there are parts of the book that he can can "help" me read. Those parts will get bigger as his reading improves. The text and pictures are great, and there's plenty of trivia that's news to me.

I think all boys (and many girls) this age have a fascination with bodily functions. My kid also has a love of learning, science and "how things work" (me and his mom were both like that as kids). There are plenty of poop/pee/fart books for this age range (and I now own several), but for the scientifically inquisitive child these are the best I've found. The other books on these subjects provided some entertainment and amusement, but these are the two that he keeps asking for again and again.

I purchased this great book for my 7yr old son. He loved the fact that he gets to say poop on every page as he reads, and I love that he is learning all kinds of facts without even realizing it. (not a "storybook"/Great buy)
