5.0 out of 5 stars I like her clear insights...her treatment of the subject is reasonably broad & deep..., November 28, 2008
This review is from: The Truth About Profiting from Social Networking (Paperback)
'The Truth about Profiting from Social Networking',
by Patrice-Anne Rutledge;

Social networking on the net & on mobile has generated a lot of buzz in recent years. In fact, I have joined a few of the known outfits just to experiment for myself, e.g. Facebook, Flickr, LibraryThing, Linkedin, & Shelfari.

When I first saw this book on display in a local bookstore recently, I just grabbed it instinctively. On the other hand, I was also curious to find out more about this technology-enabled phenomenon, especially on how to profit from its proper usage for personal & business advancement.

For me, the book is like a compendium, written in a quick-to-read, easy-to-understand perspective, with numerous examples, deep insights, good advice & easy-to-follow guidelines.

The author, apparently a reputable media consultant & eMarketer, with several books to her credit, has revealed 50 "truths" (as well as "myths") about real-world social interaction on the net.

Besides the usual networking basics, I find her treatment of the subject reasonably broad & deep, with ample advice about finding a job, recruiting the best candidates, launching a product or service, & supporting worthwhile social causes, all from the standpoint of networking.

I certainly like her clear insights into future trends, & also her exhortations to think strategically about the best ways we can leverage the new power of online collaboration & relationship building to enhance our career, business & life.

More importantly, she has also highlighted the potential dangers as well as the necessary precautions to undertake with regard to safeguarding our privacy online.

Like it or not, as the author has asserted, social networking on the net will expand exponentially in the next decade.

I reckon the author has summed up her book best through her last "truth": "You don't have to follow the (networking) trends just because they're there", with 3 great suggestions:

1) Follow the (networking) trends as they relate to you - focusing on the big picture & then drilling down to the details that affect your world;

2) Don't be afraid to not to follow the (networking) trends - knowing what works best based on your specific goals, budget & target audience;

3) Start your own trend - instead of chasing (networking) trends - focus on creating your own innovations that meet your own or customers' needs;

In other words, the networking must ultimately serve your purpose.

I also concur with the author that innovation is the first key to networking success; solid execution is the second. Be different. Be bold. Be first, & profit from the endless possibilities & unlimited potential of linking with more than a billion people around the world.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Truth about Social Networking, March 21, 2011
This review is from: The Truth About Profiting from Social Networking (Paperback)
Social Networking has created a lot of commotion and has gained a massive amount of media coverage and popularity in the past few years. Even so, there are many faulty implications and misconceptions about it. Social networking is not merely for the upcoming generation; it has reached yet an enormous, mainstream. Due to statistical evidence, it has become confirmed that majority of social network site users, as of the date of this book, are over the age of 35. Though employed leisurely, these sites are also used to establish and promote companies, organizations, and individuals devoted to profiting around the entire planet. Marketers, professionals, small business owners, job seekers, and all sorts of entities are learning how to incorporate the use of this technology in order to progress the current state of their company. The purpose of this book was to instill the reader with a solid foundation of basic social media tactics and strategies to ensure the most prominent use of such a tool. In doing so, it promoted the establishment of the most optimal way to leverage the power of companies, individuals, and all form of entity.
Some of the most successful forms of social media are: linkedlin, the largest and most commonly used form of business networking via the Internet, providing more than 19 million business professionals with individual profiling sites, Facebook, starting as a community for students of Harvard university, is now the largest social networking sites being worth millions of dollars, and Youtube, the most popular video sharing and information distributing site in the world.
The important and significance of the message of this book was to allow the reader to develop the ability to analyze the marketing niche to which they desired to belong, almost a sense of marketing segmentation. Once this information has been determined, then the company or entity can create incentives to give their followers a reason to stay.
According to the book, It is important not to create a vast amount of social networking sites for one single entity, but rather, try to elect the most pragmatic solutions for your marketing need. With so many sites available and at free to near free prices, over extending while using such sites could be detrimental to the social progress of the company. While busy focusing on expanding through the vast variety of sites, you may lose the time and effort of implementing two or three popular sites in your niche to your maximum capacity. Once these sites are fully functional and up and running with relatively insignificant effort, only then should and entity attempt to reach beyond the point of adequate expansion.
Due to the fact that I am currently establishing and expanding a company that I developed, information such as the one provided by this book is almost essential for successful marketing and niche implementation via the Internet. Often, even with the right goal in mind, it could be possible to hurt the company's capacity to gain ground in the social media aspect if steps are overlooked and skipped. Therefore, marketing directors should apply needed care in every single decision taken to expand and create profitable social media networking.
