5.0 out of 5 stars This Record Rocks!

I love this record! I love the groove on "Stone Love" and her amazing
version of Patty Griffin's "When It Don't Come Easy." This is a perfect
combination of blues, gospel and soul music, and has become the best
album I've bought in a long time.

2.0 out of 5 stars A Disappointment
Well, I may be in the minority here, but "The Truth According to Ruthie Foster" was a major disappointment to me. Let me begin by saying "The Phenomenal Ruthie Foster" and "Runaway Soul" are two of my all-time favorite cd's. They are forever and always in my cd player. Almost every song on those cd's crawl up into my soul and make me a part of the music. Almost every...

5.0 out of 5 stars RUTHIE FOSTER IS THE TRUTH!, February 9, 2009
This review is from: The Truth According to Ruthie Foster (Audio CD)
I saw Ruthie Foster here in Atlanta for the first time a few months ago and she was PHENOMENAL!
I brought "The Truth According To Ruthie Foster" a few days ago and I can't stop playing it.
My favorite song is "When It Don't Come Easy" (you can hear the soulful truth in her voice).
I would highly recommend this album to anyone that loves real music

I heard Ruthie Foster at BB Kings Club in NYC and bought her new cd afterwards. Wow! My personal favorite is I Really Love you. She rocked on this one during the show and it really comes through on the cd too. Truth and Joy. That's what she gives us. Thank you Ruthie!

4.0 out of 5 stars Curiously Restrained, July 15, 2009
This review is from: The Truth According to Ruthie Foster (Audio CD)
I want to love this c.d. I mean, how can you not a love a c.d. entitled "The Truth According to Ruthie Foster"? Moreover, this c.d. has Robben Ford on guitar and the Memphis Horns. And here, all these other reviewers have raved; and I'm in serious need of some "helpfuls" here, since Amazon won't count my friends' votes and all.

But, "the truth according to Rick Cornell" re. "The Truth According to Ruthie Foster" is this:

After several listens, I'm concerned about the restraint surrounding this c.d. How can this be? After listening to the c.d. several times, I conclude that it's not Ruthie Foster: it's the mixing and overdubbing. Ms. Foster's voice should have been sharp, front and center, and the sound should have been clear and loud. It's not. Ms. Foster can belt; and songs like "Truth!", "Joy on the Other Side" and "Thanks for the Joy" are really good r & b material. But I conclude that after listening to the c.d. and imagining what this c.d. would sound like with topflight engineering. Dammit, this day and age, I shouldn't have to work that hard!

I strongly suspect that Ruthie Foster can raise the roof. I'd love to hear her live, and have her confirm that. This c.d. should have filled that bill by itself, but it does not. RC

"The Phenomenal Ruthie Foster" lived up to its name and then some.

This one is even better.

Thanks Ruthie.

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW! THIS IS AN AWESOME NEW CD!, February 9, 2009
This review is from: The Truth According to Ruthie Foster (Audio CD)
this new one from Ruthie Foster picks up where 'The Phenomenal' left off and just GOES!
I just got it and have been playing it non-stop. It's a great mixture of blues, soul, rock, and even a little reggae influence ...and the VOICE of Ruthie Foster ...she is incredible and I bet she'll be huge in the coming years!

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional Singing Backed by Great Musicians, March 3, 2009
This review is from: The Truth According to Ruthie Foster (Audio CD)
This is an excellent recording in every department: great songs, great singing, great backing musicians. The materials cover a range of related styles from gospel to soul to blues to R&B.

Ruthie's singing talents are considerable. She has a warm, appealing voice with good sustain, and precision control over tricky phrases. Her moderate use of terminal vibrato is tasteful, and there is plenty of soul in her approach. Her use of dynamics is also tasteful and quite accessible to the listener.

All the musicians here do a fine job providing backing for Ruthie Foster's superb voice. The songs have a "real music" feel to them, reminiscent of the old-school black styles that predate the disco era. This is the real stuff.

Robben Ford's guitar playing is simply beautiful, and he knows how to support rather than overwhelm. And the same can be said for all the musicians. This is simply an exceptional lineup of talent.

Listeners who enjoy any of the styles mentioned above can't go wrong with this CD. These are musicians who know what they're doing. The CD deserves the attention of all listeners who care about supporting good music.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Truth According to Ruthie Foster, May 6, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Truth According to Ruthie Foster (Audio CD)
In April 2011 I was invited to an intimate venue in Tucson, Arizona, to a Ruthie Foster concert. She had an acoustic guitar, microphone and water. With just those, she held me in rapt attention for 2 hours with the skill and honesty of a superior voice, musicianship and humanity. She was nothing but the truth in her flawless combination of gospel/spirituals, country and R&B/blues. I immediately ordered both of her recent CDs. I have never done that before. That's how inspiring she is with her petite Texas self! I am officially a fan.

This is my first Ruthie Foster purchase but it will not be the last. Her music is sweet enough for background and meaningful enough for careful listening. I am glad I found her.
