Truth or Dare: True Madonna Fans Only,
By TT (Chicago, IL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Madonna - Truth or Dare (DVD)
Unless you're a true Madonna fan, you may not have the patience to sit through this documentary of her life on the Blonde Ambition concert tour. But if you're interested in what it's like to be one of the biggest female pop artists on tour, you may want to rent this film. The majority of the film is in black and white, while the concerts were shot in color. The title of the film is taken from a scene of "truth or dare" that Madonna plays with her entourage of dancers and backup singers in which she reveals a very personal feeling of hers that she originally refused to allow in the film. The director said that Madonna would have to kill him in order to cut that one scene... so the scene was left in. I found it interesting to see what happens the moment Madonna steps off stage--what goes on between shows or even songs. When technical problems occur during the show, she makes it known (in a not-so-subtle way) to her technical directors. You get a glimpse of what kind of relationships Madonna leads and the roles that she plays in them. You meet her dad and brother, and see what sort of relationship they have as a family. For the most part, however, her tour family is made up of her dancers and backup singers. You probably haven't seen this side of Madonna before, and you probably never will again. It's just a brief slice of her life.

Starts out great, ends up another Madonna publicity stunt.,

Alek Keshishian's vision was indeed a noble one. This could have easily become a true "rockumentary", if Madonna had not become aware of the camera and tried to be cutesy and show off. The beginning of the film is wonderful...telling Alek to "get out" of her business conversations. Later in the film, the "candid" moments appeared very contrived. The bed scene with the dancers and singers? C'mon! Are we to believe this is candid? It's probably a good movie for the hardcore fans, but the rest of us are left with an empty and cheated feeling.

A Terrific Film,

This was a terrific film, an informative and enjoyable look at Madonna on tour, behind the scenes. The concerts she performed required a lot of work, management and coordination, and it was fascinating to see parts of the process.A lot of people castigate Madonna for her lifestyle, but we all need to keep a few things in mind: No law requires people to buy concert tickets or CDs from Madonna, but that's certainly not the case for public school districts, which merely arrange to tax citizens for whatever they want. There are no laws prohibiting anyone from competing with Madonna, but that's certainly not the case for our magnificent U.S. Postal Service. Madonna will always be funding her own retirement and health benefits programs -- but that's certainly not the case for our Senators/Representatives in Washington, who have bestowed lavish benefits upon themselves with money simply confiscated from taxpayers. Madonna is a fine artist, along with being a successful free-market capitalist competitor. She has built a fortune for herself by pleasing others, and not causing any problems for anyone else. The truth is, all of us should dare to emulate the personal passion whish has fueled her success.

Madonna is a genious in the art of performing,

I know that the world has had a LOVE/Hate relationship with Madonna from the beginning and she proved all of the hypocrisy when she became the most famous woman in the World, despite the vicious attacks on her morals and character. Especially after "Ray of Light", Madonna shows that she is the ULTIMATE ICON and inspiration for women, that they really do rule the world! She is BEAUTIFUL, BRILLIANT, and fascinating as she continues to reinvent herself as she pushes the envelope to explore the deeper meaning of life beyond all the money and glitz. She has become even more beautiful at 40! You go, girl. You are a great role model for all of us to be our best. THANK YOU, Madonna, for all that you have given us. Kathy in CA kfurtado2@aol.com

This documentary came out when Madonna was at her peak, fame wise. Everyone was interested in her, whether they liked her or not. She was the heavyweight of celebrities. She's still up there. But its alittle different from 1990. For example, its like saying The Beatles were more popular in the 1970s than 1965 (think about it).Anyway, this is a great documentary - very well made. Its not dated yet at all. The music is fabulous. The black and white footage alternating with the in-color concert footage was innovative. It packed a bigger wallop in the movie theatre, but it doesn't lose too much on the small screen. I watch it again now and then. Why? Because I still enjoy it! WAY!

Madonna, peak perhaps?,

Ok, I have to be honest...I love this movie. It is beautifully shot and directed. The colors and the black and white are beautifully balanced. It is totally fun to watch. Even if you dont like the woman, the end product is very enjoyable. You have to remember, at this particular time in pop culture, the early 90's, Madonna did indeed rule. She had really come into her own as an icon and a great star. The artiface of the 80's was something I really enjoyed as a teen. But as I became an adult, it was always interesting to watch her. Ok, so maybe she really wasnt the best actress. But at that time she was the one star that was able to turn all that plastic into something really worth paying attention to. And this film showed her at her finest. Even if you didnt like her, you couldnt help but pay attention to her. Watching this movie now makes me yearn for those days. She really was the last "great star". We dont have stars like that anymore. Even Spears cant obtain that grandure. That white hot heat of celebrity. She really had it then more so then any other famous person on the planet. Of course, it has faded. Madonna now seems like King Kong. So watching this film now takes you back to a time when stars were still really "STARS". She really has become the last "Elvis, Beatles, Monroe, Dean, Taylor". And we do need that. Try to think of a star that has had that much attention in the last ten years. Julia? Gwyneth? Not one. She really is the last great star, and this film shows her at her peak. No one seems to give her that. It is at once fascinating and irritating. You want to know more, yet you feel you've seen too much. She has never been so honest and so vacuous on film before or since. It is a documentary of a modern star at her peak. It's a glimpse of the American dream. It's a peak at a life very few of us will ever see... Now, how many of those do you see every day? This is a great rock film. It is sublime. It sets the bar for every female entertainer after her. This film is Madonna at her peak, her best, her pinnacle. It is "the" Madonna film. I couldnt suggest it more...

At a time where Madonna was at the top, I thought it was very courageous of her to let you into her personal life even if it was such a "high life" a lot of us cannot understand what that must feel like but after seeing this my whole attidude towards the lady changed! It show's how a female star at the age of 32 has TOTAL control of her life not to mention a talent that far exceeds anything i've ever heard or seen! I have seen the entire concert and was left breathless at the end of it! Her opening rendition of "Express Yourself" is the best live performance I have ever seen and the song wasn't even one of my favorites! the costumes and the coriography is amazing (for its time)
The only thing I didn't get was what she was doing with Warren Beatty? Glad she got over that one quickly! Highly recommend this. What other artist do you know that has had the courage to do a similar thing?

Shameless self-indulgence and self-glorification are the overall themes in this documentary of Madonna's life (using her Blonde Ambition Tour as an excuse); but you'll never have as much fun watching anything else. Watching 'Truth or Dare' is like watching a public flasher on the street: you can't believe someone would have the nerve to expose themselves like that, yet you can't keep your eyes off it and be intrigued. Despite the fact that Madonna comes off as a self-absorbed brat, she is never funnier than how she portrays herself here. Who knows (and who cares) whether or not this is the 'real Madonna'; after all, we'll never know the real Madonna. Whereas it would be the height of obnoxiousness to see other stars behave the way Madonna does in this film, for some reason we all seem just as willing to indulge her in her fabulousness as she is willing to. After watching this a few times, I would suggest that you fast-forward through the concert segments to get back to what the film is really about: the most notorious and infamous woman in history shamelessly basking in all her glory.

This is a one in a lifetime documentary. Madonna's star and charisma truly flowed easily here. It's understandable why she became the icon that she is. A glimpse at her real life in the music business. TRUTH OR DARE is a outstanding work of cinematography. Worth the time and money. Totally clever talkin' and sassy moments to raise a few conservators eyebrows.
*****FIVE STARS!

I think "truth or dare" is a great movie. I like the fact that it shows madonna on stage and off, so you can see what she's like when she's not on stage. I also like how the movie is shot, with the performance footage in color and the behind the scenes footage in black n white. I wouldn't recommend this movie to children due to language and some nudity, but if your a madonna fan and at least 16 ( I'm 17), then I would highly recommend this move.
