I first heard Catie Curtis at a music festival in Seattle a couple of years ago. I had no idea who she was, but my boyfriend and I were literally drawn in from the sidelines by her voice and melodies. It was a smallish show (especially compared to the many "bigger" or at least better known acts that were playing that day), and it was outside. As Catie played, the crowd, *literally*, grew bigger and bigger. People stopped what they were doing just to listen to her. She was fantastic. Highlights of her show and of her CD's are the track "Radical," and, "Falling Silent in the Dark," and the wonderful "Soulfully." The two of us were torn between what to buy. We knew we had to get one of her cds because her music was so soulful, so heartfelt, so magnetic, but we didn't know which ones to get. We compromised and got one each. I bought Truth From Lies, and he bought her self-titled, newer cd. I actually think I prefer the self-titled, because it has my favorite tracks, "Soulfully" and "Falling...". But Truth From Lies also has its place in our cd collection. I perhaps like it the most for its simple and blunt discussion of homosexuality in the song "Radical." It's simply a great song, with great, clever lyrics, and she tells a book worth of meanings and heartfeltness in just a few words. Another favorite is the first track, "You Can Always Be Gone."

Take a second and read the back of the cover before popping this cd in. The words ring true for Catie's music. I'm truly surprised she hasn't had more exposure. I think people (well, people besides you) are missing out. Enjoy!

I first heard this CD when a friend of mine wanted to play me the song "Radical." I loved the great melody, guitar playing, and beautiful lyrics. I went out and got the CD and out of my whole collection it is definitely it my top three most played CD's. Troubled Mind is a beautiful duet. I also love Slave to my Belly. The Cd is full of great songs and a real appreciation for life. I recommend this CD to anyone who is a fan of great female musicians.

There seems to be an epidemic of comparisons in todays music culture; Curtis, like all artists, deserves to be appreciated for what she puts forth into the somewhat brutal commercial sphere of music. Her efforts on this album ring forth clearly. She is truly a rare artist who seems focused on expression and not other people's perception. I have been lucky enough to see her live in a small setting; she carries within her an uplifting honesty and integrity in her lyrics, music, and performance. She is not to be overlooked soooooooo check her out!

I first saw Catie Curtis a few weeks ago as the opening act to a Dar Williams concert. I am hooked. I have never enjoyed an opening act this much. I just got Truth From Lies because I love her song "Slave to My Belly" and found myself singing it on the way to work the next day. The first verse goes like this: "I'm a slave to my belly 'cause it got to be fed/Every morning, well it lifts me out of bed/ and says: 'Go to work for me baby./Buy me some bread and some wine.'/My belly doesn't like me to be playing guitar all the time/So I'm on the train all the way to town/I sell my day and ride away to town..." This song just makes me laugh because I am a slave to my belly, it wants to be fed, and that's why I'm on the train, going to work. The amazon.com review calls this awkward humor, but I think it's great. The entire CD hasn't stuck with me yet, though, hence 4 stars not 5.

Catie Curtis excells in telling a story like the poetess she is and combined with her excellent musical abilities and a great band, the results are breath taking. Particularly listen to her "Dad's Yard" an homage to her own father that makes one realize the simple truths of parental love.

When I played "The Wolf," I realized what a wonderful songwriter this artist is; But it was listening to the rest of the CD that made me fall in love with Catie and her music. And darn, I've been missing it and her all this time. John Gorka backs her on "Troubled Mind", still my favorite song of longing: "I'm tired of being strong ... let me lay down in your arms." How often I've wanted the words for those feelings. Her music is always thoughtful, but the quality is light and some cuts are just downright fun.
Don't let the gay element scare you--love is just love after all, and all the lyrics can apply to any combination. I am working on getting all of Catie's CDs, and this one plays every day several times on my stereo. Go Catie!! [reminds me of Dar Williams' lyric "I have never had a way with women, but ... make me wish that I could"]

A friend of mine loaned me this CD...let's just say that I now own *all* of Catie Curtis' work. She is a remarkable songwriter who is still developing. This is her most raw, unpolished work, but i like it that way. "Troubled Mind" is one of the best ballads i've heard in a long time.

Crash Course in Roses is also a great album...

If you like folk / singer-songwriter acoustic music, you'll love all her work.

Catie Curtis speaks to my soul. Her lyrics and music make her my favorite. She views the world as manageable. A true artist.

i've never really heard of her until I heard an excerpt of Troubled Mind...so, I ran out and bought the cd, excited to listen. when i finished listening, i had mixed feelings. the music is all right, kind of the cliche ani difranco kind of tone to it, but there were also a few pretty depressing songs.

Great songs, great voice, great stories, pure and simple one of the best CD's I've ever heard. If you've never heard of Catie but you like Lilith Fair staples such as the Indigo Girls and Dar Willaims , Catie Curtis will catapult to the top of your favorite artist list. I've been listening to this disc in my car for several months and my 45 minute commute has seemed like a 5 minute trip to the local grocery store ever since!
