This booked saved my soul! It is one of about 5 books that God led me to that drew me to Him. I always thought, having been raised Catholic, that I was a Christian. I thought that I could learn about God, but that the "relationship" part was for Priests, Bishops, Nuns.. but certainly not me. I couldn't have been more wrong. My life has gotten so much better since reading this book about 1.5 years ago. I love the Lord and praise Him for speaking to me through the stories of the women in this book. My Catholic brothers and sisters... don't dismiss this book.... read it and then decide for yourself. Compare what these women are saying to scripture. You'll more than likely be as surprised and delighted as I was.

This book is incredible, A real eye opener to the inside of a society that controls
by guilt and fear. A must read about breaking away from the convent.

Inspiriational. The reality is that Gods' word is so straight forward. After years of man made teachings, these brave women left the dead-end Catholic monolith and struck out as to follow Gods word ( as we are commanded to do ) - not mans traditions . Many of the women in the book regularly showcased how the legalism of catholicism grinds against Gods word, to the point where many nuns became physically and spiritually ill.

The stories are inspiring, the Biblical content in the book is accurate, and its interesting to see a theme running through the book where the Grace of God ( not the catholic based "saved by works" dogma ), is the true source of salvation by God.

Some interesting points from the book :

(1) Mary & Saints can intercede with God - No, only Jesus can ( John 14:6 )
(2) Mary was without sin - No, all humans have sinned, including Mary who recognised she needed a saviour and acknowledged this. ( Rom 3:23 )
(3) Tradition has equal weight with the Bible - No , this is adding to the Bible and we are told not to!! ( Rev 22:18-19)
(4) The Pope is infallible when speaking ex-cathdra - No, this implies he is perfect , but all humans have sinned ( Rom 3:23 )
(5) The Pope is called "Holy Father" -No, only God is called Holy Father ( John 17:11 ).
(6) Purgatory exists - No, not in the Bible - man made tradition only.
(7) Catholics believe in being saved in part by works - No,
"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God-not by works, so that no one can boast." ( Ephesians 2:8-9 )
(8) Jesus being offered as unbloody sacrifice - No, Jesus was offered once for all ( Heb 10:12 ), so there is no need for ongoing sacrifices in the Eucharist in the Mass, but also without blood being spilt, no sacrifice is offered ( Hebrews 9:22 )
(9) Jesus is head of the church, not Peter :
"Jesus saith unto them, Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected [Jesus], the same is become the head of the corner: this is the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes?" ( Matthew 21:42 )

Gods' Word is our sole reference. Amen.

This book describes the many different paths taken by a variety of women as they followed their quests to be completely committed to Christ. The convent seemed the ideal place to find the peace of God, free from the distractions of the world. Unfortunately, these women did not find peace but a severely disciplined community that produced more questions than answers. In most cases, these nuns were encouraged to find solace in the Catholic sacraments and further deprivation. It was the Scriptures which allowed them to finally experience God in a way they had been unable to. Yet, that also caused them to reject the way of life they had committed themselves to. This book is a bit different from Bennett's other book about converted priests. The earlier book covers testimonies from both the 1800's and 1900's, whereas this book is from former nuns in the mid to late 1900's. It is a little easier to relate to the women in this book. Anyone who wants to understand the mind of the Catholic should read this book.
