In 1991, Randle, a retired air force captain, and Schmitt, director of special investigations at the Center for UFO Studies, collaborated on UFO Crash at Roswell. Their current volume is even more convincing than its predecessor. A number of those who gave evidence visited the crash site before it was closed off, and some even picked up pieces of the material from the UFO, which was believed to have landed in 1947, and found it completely unlike any substance made on earth. Equally unsettling was the attitude of the military, which purportedly confiscated everything and threatened everyone (including young children) with death for revealing any details of the incident. Less credible are the descriptions of the "aliens" from the spacecraft as close to anthropomorphic. But this book could provoke as much controversy as the first one did. TV rights to Showtime; paperback rights to Avon.

Did a UFO crash in 1947 near Roswell, New Mexico? Did the U.S. Army Air Force recover the craft and its dead or dying crew? Was there a subsequent cover-up? Randle and Schmitt examine and compare the available evidence in this expanded version of their UFO Crash at Roswell (Avon, 1991). Randle, an Air Force reservist, and Schmitt, director of special investigations, Center for UFO Studies, present the most thorough and objective account currently available. The authors have had to rely on a lot of secondhand information but generally avoid speculation. They interviewed hundreds of people-including military personnel, civilians, and pilots-and examined government documents obtained via the Freedom of Information Act. Most disturbing are the statements of witnesses who claim they were threatened with bodily harm if they ever talked about what they saw. Possible alternative explanations are examined (Japanese balloon bombs, V-2 rockets, experimental aircraft) and discarded as implausible. Essential for public libraries, but academic libraries should also consider.

As a long-time reader/researcher on the "Roswell Incident" (I wrote & produced the audio tape tour of The International UFO Museum & Research Center in Roswell) I find this book's premise to be among the most feasable. Although the authors may be wrong about the location of "the impact site," (so far there are 4 proposed "crash sites" touted by different witnesses and researchers) there almost certainly was a craft recovery--with probable bodies and a possible SURVIVOR--in addition to the material recovered from the so-called "debris-site" near Corona. For a complete "1-oh-1" on Roswell, also read "Crash At Corona" by Stanton Friedman and "The Roswell Incident" by Wm Moore. Both these books preceeded the Randle tomes (there are 2 by Randle & Schmitt, the other being "The UFO Crash at Roswell") and it takes all 3 to cover the twists, turns and tut-tuts of this "grandaddy" of all UFO stories.

This book is well researched and has the ring of truth without the sensationalism that normally surrounds this subject. I visited the UFO Museum in Roswell recently which is, generally, not a sensationalist place but a museum of the facts surrounding the Roswell Incident. All of the participants were sworn to secrecy, on pain of death, imprisonment or harm to their families, which most maintained. In reading the story of one of the soldiers involved in the incident, on his death bed he presented a copy of this book to his heirs with the handwritten note in it that "this is what really happened". Oddly, although the Museum has an extensive library on the subject and all others related to UFOs, they did not have a copy of this book! Read it and you too will be convinced of the government coverup that occurred and that the government has remains of something alien to which the public has never been privy.
