5.0 out of 5 stars Dre. does it again! Phenomenal!!!
I can't believe how dope this cd is. From the first song to the last this cd is excellent. This is the best R&B cd i have purchased since i bought Carl Thomas's cd. I am amazed at how many haters their are blatantly lying and calling this cd whack. In a time when most cd's only have one dope track, it is refreshing to hear a complete cd. When i first heard the cd i loved...

2.0 out of 5 stars Extremely Disappointing, June 25, 2002
This review is from: Truthfully Speaking (Audio CD)
Truth Hurts makes a mistake that way to many new female RnB acts are making. Like Olivia & Sharissa before her, Truth tries to kick an extremely thugged out image, by dropping an album laced with hip hop beats, explicit lyrics, guest rappers & a bad attitude. Pushing her obvious talent to the side, Truth sings her way through pointless track, after pointless track to the point where its just atrocious and painful to listen to. I had such high hopes for her, but to say I was extremely let down by this release is an understatement.

My favorite song on radio for the past month or so is "Addictive". The track is unbelivably catchy, unique and powerful. Truth's voice fits perfectly over the West-Indian sample, and with the assistance of the legendary Rakim, the track was a guaranteed success. However, besides "Addictive", only one song on the album shows potential single status, a track that is just as hot as "Addictive"; the R. Kelly collaboration "The Truth". Unfortunatley with all the legal trouble R. Kelly is going through, it would be in Truth's best intrest to not release this song, because boycotting Kelly haters will most likely skip on the this purchase.

Elsewhere on the 14 track Aftermath collection, pointless songs, false stories and corny tracks keep the album from being what it could have been. "Queen of the Ghetto" is a perfect example of Truth's "thugged out" image being portraied. She moans her way through "Next to Me" & "Grown", and repeats topics, like on "Jimmy" & "This Feeling". Tracks like ..."Do Me" are strictly for the shock value, but not even these songs are shocking enough for people to listen to.

Overall she disappointed me big time. I was looking forward to this album once I heard her kill "Addictive". What about that part in the last line in the second verse, where she holds that note? Dont expect her to use her powerful voice like that often. Truth Hurts is the black Jessica Simpson, their voices are so powerful, but are wasted on terrible songs. Maybe she can come up with something better if she gets a second chance, because this album sucks miserably. She definetly won't stick around in this business, sorry to say it honey but I guess the Truth Hurts.

3.0 out of 5 stars different, just not different enough, July 9, 2002

It is important to realize the critical stage that Urban Music is in. On the one hand, urban music routinely makes appearances in the overall top 10 upon their release, signifying the unversal appeal of urban music. On the other hand, the albums themselves have a paper-doll resemblence. How different is Truth Hurts from Ashanti, Sharissa, or any other lesser known female artist to release an album this year. The answer lies, as it always does in the lyrics and production. The production, of course is solid, with DJ Quik carrying the water under Dr. Dre's nameplate. It is indeed nice to see Quik receiving props for "Addictive" now that the album has been released, whereas everyone was pinning credit on Dre. The rest of the album rises and falls almost at random, seldom sinking into the unlistenable range but never quite rising to the level that would make you plunk down 15-18 bucks for a CD.

When i first heard the cd i loved it. I haven't played a cd this much since my miles davis "kind of blue" cd. I still haven't taken it out of my cd player. How can a production team that consist of dre, quick, r. kelly, mel man, and timbaland go wrong. It is illogical for one to say this cd is anything, but dope. Tracks 1,2,4,9,10,11, and 13. are extremely dope the other tracks are just very good.

4.0 out of 5 stars Why is everybody saying this is bad?, December 5, 2006
This review is from: Truthfully Speaking (Audio CD)
I really do not understand the reasoning behind everyone's terrible reviews for this album. I personally believe that this is a very strong release. Some of the production falls a little flat at times, but that is really the only flaw. She shows her vocal ability and power in every song and almost every song in relatable. She is not overly "ghetto," like many say. If the language bothers you, get the clean version. Simple as that. Despite what people think, I love this album and believe that it should be in every R&B lover's collection.

Truth Hurts has some moments on this Otherwise Forgettable Disc.Dre&Crew&Others trying to Cash in a Millie Jackson type thing are missing the Boat Badly.they gotta put the R.Kelly Cut out because that is the only thing on here that has any Musical Legs to save this Mess.unless She is able to drop that Song or Rush back into the Studio She could headed toward One Hit Land&truth be told Rakim made that Song Hop.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's pretty good but can't stand the hype, August 2, 2005
This review is from: Truthfully Speaking (Audio CD)
I don't understand alot of ppl are criticizing or hating or have a distaste 4 this album. I'd been awaiting to get this 4 so long since it was released in '02. I was like 17 and 1/2 when this came rightafter my junior yr. in high school and still sounds good today. Prove to me, IMO Truth Hurts (whose real name is Shari Watson) is truly talented and a lil 'mo gangsta a bit I mean has extraordinary vocals and sure can singing which is a gift from God. Once I listen to it which I bought used @ CD Warehouse, I was a bit impressed and quite not worried nor dissappointed at all. I believe it's still nearly-Classic IMO just b/c it hasn't made 5 or 10 (or Superior) yet. Ok I actually luv the song "Addictive" true to be pretty good kinda reminds me "Uhhh Oohhhh..." by my girl Lumidee (whose my favorite singer) and surely the beats, the drum parts and 'urything to it incl. the rap thing by my man and all-time favorite Rakim. He sure is the illest rapper out there.

Other songs included I like are: Hollywood, Push Play, The Truth, to name a few. So this is not a bad album at all. I hope I keep this just to listen a lil' more or see it's real interesting. No hard feelings. This is sure is a must if u wanna try this girl out and the other thing checkout her latest release putout last yr. which trully titled TRUTHFULLY or maybe self-titled. Enjoy.

4.0 out of 5 stars DA TRUTH!, December 6, 2002

TRUTH HURTS- TRUTHFULLY SPEAKING

"If she could sing any better she'd have to be 2 people". This is a quote from Dr. Dre on his Aftermath label website. This young lady can sing, reminds you of a Gloria Gaynor 70's kinda sound/range. Her voice is strong, not as strong as the first Dre protégée Michelle, but with more range. Now we know that doesn't necessarily make a good CD. But I have to say after listening to this CD this was a very pleasant surprise. First of all the production is crisp. Dre, Quik,Hi Tek, R. Kelly and Timbaland highlight the producers list. The subject matter on this CD ranges from the music business to good sex to infidelity to addictive relationships. Very well conceptionalized CD. With a name like TRUTH HURTS you have to come real, and that's exactly what she does. Very raw and definitely not music for the crumb snatchers. She is on a Jaguar Wright level, maybe not as deep lyrically but equally as raw. There are alot of good tracks on this CD. Of course there's "Addictive" her DJ Quik joint with the Rakim appearance that's phattttt. "Next to Me" is another Quik joint, very mellow. Nice rollin CD. Dre has a cut called "Jimmy" abt a chick who's man is locked down. Kinda like a woman's perspective to the Donnell Jones cut "Life Goes On" on his latest project. "This Feelin" is her emotional plea to her man. I like when artists' do these types of songs, kinda in the MJB "My Life" mode. Very nice. "I'm Not Lookin" is another nice Quik influenced track. There is a funny interlude/appearance by the VR character "Cita" from BET that's pretty raw.Cita Uncut! One of the many highlights on the CD is the R. Kelly track "The Truth Hurts". It has a funky guitar rift and is lyrical match between the two. Very nice cut!! The CD ends with a smooth downtempo cut called "Do Me". The only thing I'll say about this track is she discusses what Tweet denies in "Opps". Very Midnight hour type cut!!! The only track that disappointed me was the Timbaland produced "Real". The track is cool but I never got a good feeling about his music and her lyrics. Just didn't mix well. This CD was a pleasant surprise, and overall the TRUTH!

4.0 out of 5 stars Pay the Bad Reviews No Mind, August 26, 2002
This review is from: Truthfully Speaking (Audio CD)
I was one of the people who was hesitant about buying or listening to this CD, especially after reading the reviews on this CD. After Addictive was played over and over on every radio station, I was sure this chick was going to be a one hit wonder, but this CD is one of the better CDs I've bought this year. As a major fan of R&B (when it's good anyway), I must say that this CD is worth a listen to. I only skip over two tracks and one features BET's Ms. Cita (nuff said).

If you don't trust the better reviews on this site, download the CD and listen to it first. I did, and it was worth every cent I ended up paying for it (once I was satisfied with what I heard). I recommend this CD to all my hesitant friends.
