This review is from: Truths We Confess Vol 2: A Layman's Guide to the West-minister Confession of Faith (Hardcover)
Vol 2 continues Sproul's excellent commentary on the Westminster Confession. The logic of the debate between the 16th century Reform and Catholic theologies is poignant in Sproul's reflection in the modern context. Basic questions of the theological debate on selection, justification, works & faith are woven through the commentary providing excellent anchoring points for testing the Word and Christ's promise in your personal walk.

Protestants may not fully understand concepts like sola scriptura, effectual calling, faith & works, and assurances of salvation. Sproul explains these matters in superb detail with in the framework of this original Christian document.

As one previously unfamiliar with the details of Westminster confession, I can say that Sproul has me fired up with this commentary series. Sproul has reanimated the old words for the modern seeker. The Confession, in 3 volumes, is a gem to be discovered by the aggressive God-seeker. The Confession and Sproul's insight puts a lot of the pieces together ... it is rich fertilizer for enriching Christian thought.

5.0 out of 5 stars Salvation, How Shall I Respond?, May 12, 2009

This review is from: Truths We Confess Vol 2: A Layman's Guide to the West-minister Confession of Faith (Hardcover)
Volume I covers the first eight chapters of the Westminster Confession. That particular volume is titled The Triune God. Who is the God described in the New and Old Testament of Holy Scripture? What is the nature of God's holiness to man's corruption? What does it mean Jesus is the sinners mediator? Who are the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost? Why does man need a Savior?

Volume two covers the next fourteen chapters of the Westminster Confession. The volume being reviewed is titled Salvation and the Christian Life: A very fine exposition of these fourteen chapters of the confession as written by RC Sproul. The book gives a thorough explanation both defining and explaining: Free Will, Effectual Calling, Justification, Adoption, Sanctification, Saving Faith and Repentance? Besides the elements of Salvation made clear and distinguished, RC Sproul explains how the Christian heart should be made effective in seeking God's Will upon Salvation. How the Westminster Confession distinguishes the term "Good Works" means to the Christian in contrast to Roman Catholic teaching? What is the difference between a `Saint's Faith that will persevere' and to have assurance of Faith? What is antinomianism? What is Legalism? How does the confession teach against both? What is the relationship of the Christian walk and God's Law? What does Christian liberty truly mean? What is a God fearing conscience? What is a worldly conscience? How is a Christian to seek God's will? Included is a discussion distinguishing God centered worship and a me centered worship?

A book written for the mature Christian.
