Editorial Reviews

Review

“A morality tale of the first order: lean and intense; dead honest and unforgiving.” (Kirkus Reviews)

“In secretive (and pseudonymous) Dutch weapons dealer Eva Maria Staal’s riveting, hair-trigger roman a clef, Try the Morgue, far-flung and dangerous locales—Chechnya, Karachi, Islamabad, Hong Kong, Beijing, Mozambique—pile up as fast as the body count…[A] cleverly constructed literary thriller.” (Lisa Shea - Elle Magazine)

“Fast-paced and emotionally perceptive, Try the Morgue takes an unforgettable, unflinching look at the brutal business of brokering freedom.” (Mythili Rao - Daily Beast)

“Fascinating… the rare thriller with complex emotions.” (Susannah Meadows - New York Times)

“Staal, a former arms dealer, fictionalizes the dilemma of a young woman caught between the thrill of international gunrunning and the security of family and home… Try the Morgue deftly marries an edgy thriller to a sensitive literary story.” (Bruce Jacobs - Shelf Awareness)

“A wry, clever, suspenseful tale told with style and panache that had me turning pages as quickly as my fingers permitted. An exceptional work and a guaranteed good read.” (Christopher Reich, New York Times best-selling author of Rules of Betrayal)

Try the Morgue is a thrilling rocket ride through the world of international arms deals, but its real ruthlessness lies in Staal’s honesty about the human spirit and her unforgiving look at what it means to have a conscience. I was blown away by this remarkable book.” (Zoë Ferraris, author of City of Veils)

“A stunning debut. Try the Morgue is not only a fascinating glimpse into the world of international arms dealing, but a terrific read as well. Staal clearly knows her stuff, both on and off the page. Her settings are perfectly drawn, her characters tough yet vulnerable—and always infinitely believable.” (Jenny Siler, author of Easy Money)

I love this short but adventure-packed story. The characters were all interesting and the events kept me riveted. I hope to read more books by this writer.

I thought this was an exciting read, interesting in its subject matter (a bit off-beat for me) and well written. No boring passages, held my attention throughout. Enjoyed following the protagonist's various difficulties. I would recommend it, although it's not going to stay with you for long after you've finished it.

Both my husband and I read this book that we won on Goodreads. We both enjoyed the book as we do like thrillers and mysteries, but to know that this actually exists and that the author was part of it, was a bit terrifying to me. The books seems to give a very accurate portrayal of the people and the lives that arms dealers live and you are compelled to keep reading as the story is quite hypnotic.

Realizing that the author actually participated in this international arms dealing seemed almost surreal to me, and I think that at times I didn't realize that it has happened in real life, and quickly had to think again about how this was reality and how dangerous it was. It really is shocking at times to know how much danger this involved to be in this situation.

The author did a great job in relating the story and for anyone who likes intrigue and some rather shocking information, this is a good book for you to read.

Since I make it a habit of not reading book jackets before I read a book, half way through the book I read the background of the author. When I realized that the author had actually lived the stories in the book, I found the saga even more compelling. Not for every reader, I feel that I am much more educated about the arms trade that takes place around the world. Some parts of life are cruel. Swisher, West Chester, Pa.
