Most Helpful Customer Reviews

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful By William B. Arledge on June 15, 2002
Format: Hardcover
Published in 1944 under rules from the War Production Board in order "to conserve materials and manpower" this book is a "collection of anecdotes and stories, mostly humorous", dedicated "to all the people whose wit or lack of it made this volume possible". Illustrated by Carl Rose, whose drawings are the type you just do not see in books anymore. This is truly for someone who is a fan of Mr. Cerf's. A lot of the stories and jokes went over my head, and there were plenty of unfunny items. The only reason for this is the time frame. As Mr. Cerf has pointed out, certain tellings of jokes have a limited lifespan. The chapters include such topics as Hollywood, The Literary Life, animal stories, War stories, and a chapter of ghost tales. Quite honestly this was the book I used on several occasions to put myself to sleep (as with all of Mr. Cerf's books) but I can tell you, I had no nightmares on those nights. I slept with content.

If you are lucky enough to have parents - or, probably, Grandparents, who have this book, borrow it.
If you want to have a very funny look at the 30's and 40's and 50's this is the place. When I was a
child, quite the while ago, we read a chapter called 'The Trail of the Tingling Spine' and scared
each other every time. The stories are really shocking and frightening. Stories that will really give you
a chill. The shaggy dog stories are Very Shaggy, and I love them. You can read any chapter in any
order and want more. So get this book from Amazon, A relative or A friend, and you will want more.
This is probably my fifth copy of the book: tip: do not lend this book unless you put some sort of
electronic device in it, because I did not get mine back - ever! Cerf's Up!!
Enjoy!!!!
