5.0 out of 5 stars Gosh, I didn't think he could get any better, September 20, 2004

Boy, was I wrong?! I loved his last album, We Can't All Be Angels - some really good songs there, even though MCA only released two singles. I have been a David Lee fan for about six years and since parting ways with MCA, he has written some good stuff which other artists have recorded -- On A Mission by Trick Pony, People Like Us by Aaron Tippin, Last Thing I Do was recorded by Brooks & Dunn on their Stars & Stripes cd, and also it is on Montgomery Gentry's new cd You Do Your Thing -- among many others! Anyway, Tryin' To Get There is the best yet. I can't pick a favorite song because every one of them is something almost everyone can relate to. The lyrics, the melodies... this cd has everything. There should be several singles released from this album if country radio has any sense at all. You just have to buy it and see for yourself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Riotous good fun!, August 18, 2004

This review is from: Tryin to Get There (Audio CD)
That wonderfully fun party song "Loco" alone makes this album worth purchasing, but you'll love the other tracks as much. Every song on this album could easily be a hit. Murphy gives us old fashioned, toe tapping, sing along fun with this one and is surely destined to stand onstage at the next CMA Awards. You gotta get this one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Traditional Country Music, June 1, 2004

If you like authentic traditional country music, you will LOVE this CD. There is no bad track, and in contrast to another reviewer of this CD, two of my favorite songs are "Mama's Last" and "Beggin for Affection". I own everything this artist has done, and I rate this CD the very best. David Lee Murphy reminds me alot of Steve Earle's early work. I am really glad that Nashville is still putting out this kind of country music, although it is getting harder to find.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Tryin' To Get There", April 20, 2004

This review is from: Tryin to Get There (Audio CD)
It's been 7 years since David Lee Murphy's last CD release, but his latest, "Tryin' To Get There", has proved to be worth the wait. Like Murphy's earlier CD's, this outing provides plenty of party music; most notably the current hit, "Loco", which is racing up the charts, and "I Like It Already", which, as the opening track, is a prefect song to get things moving. In addition David Lee has managed to show his softer side in ballads like, "Inspiration" and "It Might Be Me", without losing the "edge" that seems apparent in his music. Another standout is the title track, which Murphy is especially proud of because he co-wrote it with the late Waylon Jennings. Over all, Murphy's voice and music have gotten even better over the years. Both have even more breadth and depth than his earlier, great, tunes. In summary, David Lee Murphy may have been off the charts for awhile, but like the wine in that dusty bottle from one of his earlier hits, David Lee has only gotten better with time.

5.0 out of 5 stars HE'S BACK AND IS HE BACK, March 31, 2004

From the opening chords of I Like It Already to the end of the CD you know without a doubt you will "LIKE IT ALREADY".
Favorite, can't really say that I have one but as "MAMA'S LAST" is one that he has done live at concerts I would have to say that it get's a little more attention than the others. The inside cover of this CD says "Meant To Be Played As Loud As Your Speakers Will Allow" After listening to this CD let me advise you IT CAN'T BE ANY OTHER WAY.
David lee, just when we think you can't get any better you show us.
And you know as the final chord of Killin The Pain hits, THE BEST IS YET TO COME.
I know people who aren't big country fans and weren't big David Lee fans but after this CD, they are. What Talent he has always had, to write, and perform his own songs, and to also have others do the same. He may have been silent for the last 8 years but we're hearing him loud and clear.
TOTALLY AWESOME JOB.

I have been a fan of David Lee Murphy since my wife began listening to country radio just about the time that Party Crowd was released in 1995.

David Lee's is a story that makes you happy that he has moxie and wouldn't quit. After more than 10 years of honing his craft, he finally broke through in 1994. Since then, he recorded 3 albums, was not resigned by MCA in 1997, and has been without a recording contract until now.

His latest record continues his tradition of crafty songwriting, with plenty of memory making melodies and inventive chorus lines, along with more generous use of old fashion country musical tastings (more prominence given to the fiddle and steel guitar). Although the song "Loco" cracked the top 5 in July, in my opinion, there are several stronger cuts that make this a record worth your time and attention. "I Like It Already" kicks off the record with a strong, party sound and toe tapping beat. Song 4 on the CD (not listed on amazon.com) is called "Own Little World", and I think it has the best shot at being another top 10 song, as it has the strongest chorus and melody mix on the CD. The title cut "Tryin' To Get There", may say a lot about David Lee's perspective on the music business and his aspirations to remain a part of it. The 2nd single, "Inspiration", (to be released in mid August) is a change of pace for David Lee, in that it is a ballad that finds him crooning naturally, something I now believe suits his vocal stylings. The best song, based on 7 days of listening, is "Might Be Me", which doesn't have a radio sound stamped on it, but then, David Lee has the habit of making music that you want to hear, even without the benefit of country radios current limitations (seek out his 2nd CD - Getting Out the Good Stuff - and listen to Pirates Cove as well as his last CD - We Can't All Be Angels - for She's Not Mine).

I own all 4 of his CDs, so I am not a fly by night fan. This CD continues his legacy of crafting music and lyrics that stand the test of time, and I root for him always, cause he's had to earn his place on the country music ladder. BTW, he also does a great concert, plays his music with zeal and heart, and engages the audience throughout the show.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great CD!, August 6, 2005

David Lee Murphy is a phenomenal songwriter and this CD proves it once again. Not to mention he has a great voice. I've had the opportunity to see DLM and his band live and they rock! This is another one of his CD's where every song is a good song. If you ever get a chance to hear him play, check him out. You won't regret it! And before you go see him, pick up this CD, along with the other three!

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW!!!, March 21, 2005
This review is from: Tryin to Get There (Audio CD)
I just recently discovered David Lee Murphy and picked up this CD. All I can say is WOW!! The entire CD is excellent, not a bad song on it. But holy cow, the ballads are simply beautiful. I hope to catch him live in concert in the near future and definitely will be picking up the rest of his CD's.

It's known that David Lee Murphy has been away from the recording scene at the Music City, USA since "We Can't All Be Angels", although we've heard his words thru Brooks & Dunn, Aaron Tippin, Montgomery Gentry.
This time, David makes an awesome comeback with this 12-track album, where all of 'em are fantastic - no filler songs here...they all worth listening.
This Is the album that will put him back on the spotlight of Nasville and all country stations nationwide.
If you know his work, you'll like this one a lot...and if you don't know..pick this one as a great start...
It's fun to listen over and over again

5.0 out of 5 stars David Lee Murphy returns with a bang!!!, March 28, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Tryin to Get There (Audio CD)
After nearly seven years since the release of his last album and a new label, David Lee Murphy, one of the greatest singer/songwriters in country is back! This is the much anticipated fourth album from David Lee, the man who is best known for songs such as Dust on the Bottle and Party Crowd. This album just like his previous discs provide a powerful combination or classic country and rockin' country that make DLM so unique in the industry. His rich, unique voice is back the only difference are two love songs which are sung in a rockin' DLM way. This is a must have for anyone that truly loves country music. David Lee may not be getting the amount of airplay as many of those less talented are, but then again neither is Chris LeDoux. I repeat a best buy...this is the best David Lee Murphy disc since his classic Out With a Bang disc that skyrocketed his career over ten years ago. Add Tryin' to Get There to your collection and you will not be unhappy!
