5.0 out of 5 stars One Overlooked Song
Yes, this is the album that made me a Barry Manilow fan waaaay back in Junior High. Go ahead, roll your eyes, and cringe in the memory of shmaltzy melodies, too many key changes, and "Copacabana". You would be well within your rights.

3.0 out of 5 stars Kinda So-So
The one thing I remember about this album was me trying to locate it. It took about three and a half years and when I did find it, it was in the most unlikely spot, under a bunch of discontinued albums. The very bottom one. I was so excited to have finally gotten it, then to get it home and I was like 'oh, bother', but anyway its still a Manilow album and I still have...

Yes, this is the album that made me a Barry Manilow fan waaaay back in Junior High. Go ahead, roll your eyes, and cringe in the memory of shmaltzy melodies, too many key changes, and "Copacabana". You would be well within your rights.

But this disc contains one highly overlooked song that, IMHO, is one of the best Manilow ever recorded, and one of the finest ballads ever written: the often-overloked "Lay Me Down". Here's an understated performance of a fantastic melody. Wonderful lyrics. A great tune.

Of course, the rest of the album is fine, too, but "Lay Me Down" deserves a place in your CD collection. For that, and that alone, this one gets 5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Of Course I Had to Have This One in My Collection!, September 30, 2002

By now you realize that I can't really be objective about Barry. This is number 14 in my new CD Replacement and Discovery collection. Number One Discovery being "Singin' With the Big Bands". Number One Replacement being "2am Paradise Cafe".

I remember this cover, and I remember wishing that there was a picture of Barry on it instead (now I kinda like the kitchy piano man) but I got a big smile when I opened the CD case and found a picture of Barry with Bagel (the beagle) and wearing his "I Love Beagles" t-shirt. For me, worth the price of the CD!

But what about the music, you ask? In every Barry CD, there are one or two songs that are Greatness. Those are "As Sure As I'm Standing Here", and "Lay Me Down". I'm also adding "Marry Me A Little", a bonus track Barry had originally recorded for this album, and then left it out. It has all the promise of what lay ahead musically for Barry. It's like that magical first kiss at the end of a great date.

So... will you be hearing from me again? Sure! I just got "Showstoppers"! And if it's true Barry has 30 CD's on Amazon alone, I've still got 16 to go.
Really love ya, Barry!
(You all know he's cool again, right?)

4.0 out of 5 stars Songwriter at his best..., February 15, 2006

This review is from: Trying to Get the Feeling (Audio CD)
Barry is first and foremost a songwriter, and this album epitomizes the very gift that is so much an integral part of him.Someone else usually does the lyrics. But can you listen if the MUSIC doesn't first capture the attention? That is precisely my point. It's the SOUND that pulls you in,that you actually HEAR,and then you listen to the lyrics. This album is another of Barry's in which he tells us a story and we are yet again captured....

CLASSIC BARRY MANILOW. I'M A FAN OF BARRY'S SOFTER PIANO PLAYING BALLADS, LIKE "AS SURE AS I'M STANDING HERE" AND "LAY ME DOWN". THANK YOU ARISTA FOR FINALLY RE-RELEASING THIS ALBUM ON CD, AND WITH A BONUS TRACK!

5.0 out of 5 stars Even Better!, December 15, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Trying to Get the Feeling (Audio CD)
I just purchased this new version of this Barry old Jewel. As soon as I put the CD on the player I ran to the new track #12. And to my surprise I found Barry "Marvelously" singing a Sondheim tune as I had never heard. So if this CD was excellent on its first issue, this new masters makes it EVEN BETTER!! If you like him DON'T miss it!

5.0 out of 5 stars I Want to have this feeling, September 18, 2005

I am crazy about this cd. I want to have the feeling I get listening to this collection with every cd I purchase. The title track is one of the all time great power ballads and the reason I bought this one but I must say I found so many other songs I had never heard before that are gems. She's a Star is a song Barry wrote about his time touring with Bette Midler and it says it all. NYC Rhythm makes you want to dance aroung the room. Lay Me Down breaks your heart. Marry Me a Little is such a wonderful surprise, I adore this song, thank you Barry for including it on this cd.

4.0 out of 5 stars HE WROTE THE SONGS, November 21, 2011
This review is from: Trying to Get the Feeling (Audio CD)
You have to either like Manilow or hate him--it's that simple., I like Barry--I was a young adult in the 70s and got into his style of romantic schmaltz and bright disposable pop. TRYING TO GET THE FEELING is a good example of his popularity, balancing the album with big power ballads and uptempo tunes. In addition to his signature hit I WRITE THE SONGS and the title track, he scores with the unusually restrained and lovely LAY ME DOWN, the theatrical SHE'S A STAR, the Sondheim-penned bonus track MARRY ME A LITTLE, the spirited BEAUTIFUL MUSIC and NEW YORK CITY RHYTHM and the sensitive AS SURE AS I'M STANDING HERE.
Manilow has had a long, outstanding career and still has millions of devoted fans--just stay away if he's not your cup of musical tea.

5.0 out of 5 stars A BONUS!! Yes!!, March 22, 1999

This CD is worth the price just to hear the bonus track, Marry Me A Little. This is a great song and I'm thrilled it's been included. It doesn't hurt that the CD contains some other great songs also.
