Book Description

August 1999
The daughter of a minor Russian aristocrat, Anastasia Romanovna was fifteen years old when she was chosen over more than ten thousand other girls to become the bride of sixteen-year-old Ivan IV, first Tsar of Russia. Charming, beautiful and enchantingly naive, her story is a rich fabric of dangerous intrigues, of evil plots, of intense jealousies, and of blinding passion. They said she was a witch who used her powers to capture the most powerful man in Russia! From fabulous balls in golden palaces to hunting parties at splendid country dachas, "The Tsar's Woman" evokes all the power and glamor of an exotic era long gone.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

Most of the characters in this story actually lived, and most of the action took place in accordance with dates found in extensive research. Where data was lacking, however, I took the liberty of presenting events as they might have been or, better yet, as - for purposes of entertaining reading - they should have been. In addition, I have endeavored to present sixteenth century Russia as it actually was, and customs, style of dress, food, manner of dining, etc., are faithfully depicted. This book was originally published in Russia and, during a press conference in Moscow, I was asked the following question: "Why would an American woman with a Native American background spend fifteen years of her life researching and writing a book about a Russian Tsarina?" It was a question I had asked myself many times. Never in the course of my Oklahoma childhood had I been exposed to anything Russian. And yet, as an adult - even a very young adult - an inexplicable fascination with this intriguing country seemed to creep over me. The first trip I took outside the United States was to Russia. The first book I ever wrote was about Russia. The first foreign language I ever studied was Russian. And when, in reading Russian history, I encountered Ivan's bride, Anastasia Romanovna, I seemed compelled to write their story. Why? My answer to the writer was the only one I could think of: "I must have been Russian in another life." My response received a big laugh. But subsequent deliberation of the subject has made wonder if my answer was more than a flippant retort. If there is such a thing as reincarnation.... Is it possible that I was the Tsar's Woman?

4.0 out of 5 stars Love, Lust, and Power, January 30, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The Tsar's Woman (Paperback)
In The Tsar's Woman, The Tsar and his woman, Anastasia, are skillfully wrought as are the cruelty and intrigues of the Russian Court. The lusty characters, their loves and hates and thirst for power keep the excitement high from the initial opening drama to the surprising ending. Strong women who will stop at nothing to get what they want are pitted against a woman whose only weapon is love--to wield it, she must be willing to sacrifice truth, honor, and her very being. With clear and convincing detail, The Tsar's Woman transports readers to a Russia mostly known in history books. It reawakened gratitutde in this reader for the laws that protect us, although sometime imperfectly, against a leader who rules by impulse and is driven to national acts by private jealousies.
