4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent sound April 24, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
There are obviously tons of excellent recordings of this great symphony. This one features excellent sound quality. I listened to the 'regular cd' layer in stereo,
and can't comment on the SACD sound. The orchestral playing is excellent, and the interpretation suitably 'Russian' in character. I hope Kitajenko is recording a complete series of Tchaikovsky's symphonies, as this one and the Manfred recording
are both terrific. I have to reserve the 5th star for Mravinsky and Bernstein though.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 5 Kitajenko March 12, 2012
Format:Audio CD
Would anyone like to guess at how many extant recorded versions there are of Tchaikovsky's Fifth Symphony? I don't know, and I offer no reward for anyone who does. The Naxos Music Library alone lists 65, though to be fair, some of these are probably no longer available for sale. And there are still others...
This new offering, with Dmitrij Kitajenko (a.k.a. Dmitri Kitayenko) on the Oehms label, clearly faces stiff competition against many versions, some admittedly now historical, from other famous conductors such as Abbado, Bernstein, Dorati, Fedoseyev, Gergiev, Jansons, Järvi, Karajan, Mravinsky, Muti, Ormandy, Pletnev, Svetlanov, and Walter.
This CD has many things going for it - a full-blooded performance, excellent sound, and a small bonus in the form of the 4-minute overture to Tchaikovsky's opera Pikovaya Dama (The Queen of Spades). Cologne's famous Guerzenich Orchestra, which dates back to 1827, offers splendid playing under the famous Russian conductor Dmitrij Kitajenko.
Should you buy it? If you already own a favorite version, you may not want another one. If you're looking for a new version or you're a Kitajenko fan, this version will probably please you.
