5.0 out of 5 stars This album kicks butt!
Tsotsi - an amazing story of transformation and redemption, and the music is its the movie's soul. I knew just a few minutes into watching the film that I had to have the soundtrack. It rocks hardcore! Buy it!

versus
3.0 out of 5 stars something truely different
i have mixed yet pleasent feelings about this soundtrack. i personally despised the movie, but i loved the music so i found the soundtrack. now the music on the CD is basically split into african cultural music/ atmospheric music, which i found lightening and even inspirational. the other half of this CD was a sort of hip hop, bounce, rap sort of thing. now while it was...

I just saw the movie. I don't usually like rap or hip hop, but Zola's music for the film combines the best of fat gangster sounds with the best of African folk music. If you like African music, non-minimalist goth industrial, or Bulgarian folk, or Dr Alban, you will love this soundtrack.

Mix of hip hop with other african beats, excellent sound. My favorite songs are MDLWEMBE by Zola, Matafotofo, Munt Omnyama, Stolen Legs and On the Tracks.

The music is generally happy and fun to dance to--a stark contrast to the bleak conditions under which the principals in the movie live in in the townships. The songs by Zola are particularly good. I've listened to it a lot.

5.0 out of 5 stars This soundtrack truly reflects this film., October 10, 2006

The soundtrack is amazing. The music embedded in here is strong and goes perfect with this picture. As I said before on my review of this film there were times I would playback a scene so I can rehear the music samples. I might not understand a lick on what they are saying but the soundtrack is fascinating to me.

After watching this film I was able to grab hold of the soundtrack. The tracks were put together by local South African's. The artist who are particularly outstanding are the tracks by local Kwaito artist Zola which uniquely combine local and international hip hop into a new sound, as well as tracks with the inspiring voice of Vasi Mahlasela over choirs, which recalls Ladysmith Black Mambazo.

If you had seen the movie and paid an attention to detail in the spread of the music throughout the film, the middle class family listens to soft R & B on their car radio, in comparison to the township sound that surrounds the Soweto residents indicating their class. Highly recommend to those who enjoyed the film and to those who love world music.

SAW "TSOTSI" TWO DAYS BEFORE THE OSCARS AND I WEPT. IT WON, NATURALLY!

HAD TO BUY THE CD BECAUSE I WANTED TO REMEMBER THE UPLIFTING ENERGY BEHIND THE MUSICAL SCORE IN CONTRAST TO THE STUNNING ACTING, VISUALS AND DRAINING EMOTIONS.

I'VE BEEN DANCING EVER SINCE.

SEE THE MOVIE, BUY THE CD AND THEN THE DVD (WHEN IT'S RELEASED) AND SPARK A CELEBRATION IN YOUR OWN LIFE!

5.0 out of 5 stars redemption and forgiveness, August 27, 2006

this is an excellent film of world class quality. it surpasses anything i've seen on the american scene in quite some time. it is mature, emotional, and very thought-provoking. it deals with the courage to try to redeem one's self inspite of the realities
some people are often faced with on a daily basis. the sound track is also well felt
and reverberates with the spirit, energy, and soulfulness of africa.

Zola is the 2Pac of Africa. No one else compares. He is an amazing hiphop artist but even more, he's amazing poet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Zola, Zola, Zola!, July 28, 2007
This review is from: Tsotsi (Audio CD)
Wow, this is good! Nine of nineteen tracks are by Zola so your opinion of him and his music will mostly determine how you like the soundtrack. My favorites are the first two "Mdlwembe" and "Bhambatha". There's a mix of nine of Zola's South African dancehall/gansta rap songs (I probably better enjoy it without understanding Zulu and I'm not usually a rap fan), six good songs by other presumably South African artists and four atmospheric interlude pieces from the movie that don't really fit with the rest of the music (a little too slow). Some of the background music in the Zola songs sounds a little too synthesized/simplistic but that doesn't get in the way of Zola's energy and attitude. It would have been nice to have a translation of the lyrics, but the music is enjoyable regardless. A great companion to a good movie.
