This book is currently the best on the subject of Tsujigahana, the preferred style of textile decoration for samurai in late feudal period Japan. Tsujigahana is primarily a stitched tie-dye process enhanced with painting or embriodery. The plates are well photographed, and cover a range of subject matter. It also contains measurements of many of the garments considered in the text

This book is one of the very few available in English on the topic of tsujigahana, a textile decoration technique which was practiced and perfected in 16th century Japan. If you are interested in the development of Japanese garment design, shibori dye resist, or textile history, you will find this book an invaluable addition to your library. The book discusses the various methods used to embellish garments for royal family members, court nobles and other dignitaries, traces the provenance of particular garments now designated as National Treasures, and describes the rise in popularity of this technique and its eventual decline. The book is divided into chapters which are presented in a very readable style. It is loaded with generously-sized color plates and contains a useful index and an appendix of terms.
