4.0 out of 5 stars GRANDFATHER HELD HOSTAGE, February 10, 2007
This review is from: Tsukuyomi: Moon Phase Volume 4 (Paperback)
Count Kinkle is determined to get Hazuki back in his clutches at any cost and he doesn't mind ruining the lives of everyone around her. He not only takes over the mind of Kouhei's friend and co-worker, Hiromi, but he has also kidnapped his grandfather from the hospital where he was recovering from the wounds he received in the first battle with the Count. Kinkle invites Kouhei and company to the isolated mansion where Hazuki grew up with her mom, and spends his spare time torturing Elfriede, who revolted against him last volume after drinking Kouhei's blood. Will Kouhei, Hazuki, and Seiji be able to defeat Kinkle and free Gramps?

Keitaro Arima is not only good at drawing domestic comedy and cute girls. He's also quite good at doing action sequences with crisp and clean lines that are almost divinely precise. The art is just great relatively speaking in terms of this genre. The conflicts are intense as well and it's easy to sympathize with a little girl that has been exploited and imprisoned without love for years. Her adopted family is beginning to crystallize around her in the form of Kouhei and his family, who have set themselves up as her protector. While there is some ulterior motives for this, such as Gramps' quest to find out what happened to his daughter, you can feel that they're starting to love her, even if they don't admit it outright. This is a great series. Check out the anime too that adds a few additional characters but still follows the same basic story arc so far.

4.0 out of 5 stars a fine manga, October 5, 2006

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Tsukuyomi: Moon Phase Volume 4 (Paperback)
For manga fans, here is the scoop:

I like this story; it is 3 parts romantic comedy and 1 part dramatic vampire soap opera. The characters are surprising: Hazuki is endearing but tempestuous. Kouhei is your typical nice guy, but is a little thoughtless. By now I really care about Hazuki's plight, and Elfried's, and I look forward to when our mismatched couple will get together.

As for "NoCensorship," her sensibilities are not adjusted. The scene where Elfried is, well, whipped by her boss is shocking and I don't like it. I guess the author wants to establish that Elfried (a vampire) is completely subjegated to what's his name, her boss. I won't defend it (there goes a star!). At least he doesn't dwell on it for long. Also, this stuff doesn't appear in the first 3 volumes.

As for the invisible nipples, this isn't censorship. Any manga fan will recognize this standard technique to suggest nudity without actually depicting it. You see the same level of fan service in Tenchi Muyo, or Ranma 1/2!

--I'll let someone else tackle Tokyo Pop's ratings system.

To sum it up, it is a mostly good volume of a series that I like a lot!

ps. Am I the only one to notice that the author's pseudonym pays tribute to Love Hina and Kare Kano?

1.0 out of 5 stars Warning: This volumes age rating is too low and this volume has been censored, August 30, 2006
This review is from: Tsukuyomi: Moon Phase Volume 4 (Paperback)
Just a warning for potential buyers:
Tokyopop's 13+ rating for this volume is inappropriate. The volume contains nudity, torture, sexual assult, bondage, and suggestions of incest. It's at least 16+ and maybe even mature. Future volumes get even more matue, so buyer beware.

On top of the inappropriate age rating, they still censored it by removing nipples from Elfried on four pages, which included the afformentioned torture, secxual assult, and bondage elements.
