Soviet Jet Bomber 1952, March 4, 2010
This review is from: Tu-16 Badger in Action - Aircraft No. 108 (Paperback)
I'm a big fan of the In Action Series. This book is just like all of the others in the series - 48 pages, 2 pages of color drawings, lots of line drawings,B&W photos and just enough narrative to give you a good overview of the plane.
This plane was designed as a strategic bomber - to carry nuclear bombs. It is smaller than the B-52, could carry up to 10 tons of bombs (the B-52 could carry 35 tons). The Badger was retired in 1993 after approximately 1,500 were made. Some versions still are in operation in China.
So, what's not to like? Photos are grainy - this is because the book was published in 1992, before the West got access to color photos - the ones in this book are mostly taken by Western planes that intercepted the Tu-16 Badger, taking pictures from the cockpit during the interception.
Yefim Gordon has published a book on the Tu-16, it's expensive, but has more details, better photographs. This is a nice book to have in your collection, but not a must have. I bought it used, so I'm not disappointed.
