An eclectic, searching compilatn that makes u say ROAD TRIP,
This review is from: Y Tu Mamá También (Audio CD)
This very eclectic soundtrack is great for driving, and matches the film perfectly. I recommend it to even those without a car. The film is a story of two adolescent Mexicans (one, a privileged son carrying an Aztec name; the other, a middle class son a single parent mom) searching for adult identities, and a slightly older Spanish woman seeking a spiritual liberation, who join on a road trip through an adolescent, class-structured, cheating, sensual, Mexican culture that is also in search of a cultural and political maturity. The compilation soundtrack, which one can envision being used in a VW commercial, combines Mexican Groove (Senor Coconut), Alternative (Brian Eno, La Rev., Natalie Imbruglia), Acoustic, and Folklorista (Flaco Jimenez, Plastilina Mosh) cuts. There is an acoustic version of To Love Somebody by Eagle Eye Cherry, and the CD closes with a cut by the late Frank Zappa (which has never be licensed outside of a full Zappa album). Zappa's cut sets the emotional tone of the film. Standouts include Senor Coconut (a Kraftwerk-German living in Chile) that just makes u want to expose yourself and go on a marimba filled road trip; Bran Van 3000 with Eek a Mouse on shopping; Café Tacuba with a cut that can only be found on this CD; Flaco Jimenez with a piece that makes you yearn for a Mexican beach like Heaven's Mouth; and the introspective feeling Marco Antonio Solis.

"Go Shopping" -- and buy this CD! Ahora!,

As great as the film "Y Tu Mama Tambien" is, it just wouldn't be the same without the music, which is a character in and of itself. The songs on the soundtrack will send you on a road trip to sonic places that are worth visiting again and again. If you don't know anything about Mexican music, you're in for a big surprise -- and a real treat. I'm sitting here at work with the Cafe Tacuba song "Insomnio" in my head, and I couldn't be happier. The bouncy fun of "Here Comes the Mayo" and "Go Shopping" will hook you even if you don't speak Spanish. And there's a Frank Zappa song at the end. You can't go wrong!

Eclectic? Yes, but not quite what I expected,

When I saw the artist lineup for this soundtrack the soundtrack from "Amores Perros" immediately came to mind, so I ordered it. To my dissapointment it's not really even half as good. There's a handful (roughly half of the album) of good songs, mixed with some very basic works that don't belong in there. My favorites: "Here Comes the Mayo," "To Love Somebody" (reminds of Pulp Fiction's music in a way), the very mambo-ish downtempo "Showroom Dummies," "Insomnio" by the Tacubos, and Brian Eno's and Zappa's tracks toward the end. I am giving it four stars because the former are really great works, but the album as a whole was a dissapointment.

This is the best soundtrack I've ever heard, possible one of the best CD's as well. It introduced me to the wonderful word of rock en espanol, which I am now completly addicted to. I went out right away and bought a bunch of albums of the artists featrued on the album, like Plastilina Mosh ( a band which is also referenced in the film - Tenoch slept with Julio's girlfriend after one of their concerts) Cafè Tacuba, Molotov, and Bran Van 3000, all of which are faboulous bands. Another one I would recomend is Volovan if you like the Mexican music in the soundtrack. This is a fabulous CD and i would recomend it to anyone looking for some new music to spice up their CD player with. And if you haven't seen the movie, what on earth are you waiting for? It's great!

I bought this to practice learning Spanish - listen to the words in Spanish and, as needed, read the subtitles. They talk very fast and I had much difficulty understanding them. I was able to learn some latin american slang.
The story is okay and the movie's well done. It would probably appeal primarily to those in the their teens and twenties. A couple of very macho just post-high school dudes take a just separated-from-her-husband older woman for a beach getaway. The men bicker and can't perform sexually to her expectations. The ending has an interesting albeit sad twist. There is some good latin american rock in the background.

A really amazing soundtrack for an amazingly real movie. Songs are great and original... you can stick the cd in your car stereo and not take it out for a week without getting tired of it...Not to mention the genius idea of including short narrator-style stories with each song in the album cover . My one complaint-- it couldve done without the annoyingly creepy "Showroom Dummies". Overall a good buy.

If you enjoyed the film you will want to bring home this CD. Tracks #3 & #13 are easily my favorite. Perfect for taking on a long summer drive. Very upbeat music and romantic as well. A must have for any Cinco de Mayo party

Anyone who has enjoyed KCRW's "Rare on Air" collections or their eclectic radio programs will not be surprised at the variety of great music on this soundtrack. I opened the liner notes for this CD and found not just artist names and song titles but a sort of meta-text to the movie, details about the characters and their story that were not part of the movie at all (I'd always wish a soundtrack would do this). This is a movie about being at that point in young adulthood where so many moments are revelatory and poignant; we find out why this mustic resonated with "los charolastras" and it reminds us of how intensely we felt music then, too. (But watch the movie first, because the liner notes could give too much away.) The music varies from the fun and quirky - "Go Shopping" - to the heartbreaking and romantic "Si No Te Hubieras Ido" by Marco Antonio Solis; it stands strong on its own, even if you haven't seen the movie. The mix of Anglo and Latin music, like Julio and Tenoch, is smart, precocious, well traveled and very hip.
