Book Description

October 31, 2009
Julius Caesar wrote of the Celts: The Celts were fearless warriors because they wish to inculcate this as one of their leading tenets, that souls do not become extinct, but pass after death from one body to another. Seven Sisters. The infamous collection of stars align with the full moon on Hallo een, alighting the sky for a destiny that s waited centuries. Dru, a gifted, but tormented witch living alone on the coast of Ireland wakes to find Ty, her long-time love, mysteriously disappeared. In Paris, Katerina, an oppressed but talented dancer bravely takes the stage in one final performance before escaping a life of tyranny, looking for a freedom she d only known in dreams. Aodh, The Dagda, a man made of ancient legends, has slumbered for two millennia. Tonight, when the moon is full and the stars are aligned, he rises from his temporary grave to find the world is not as he remembers. His people, his family, his tribe have vanquished, along with the majority of his considerable power. Chance takes him to Dru, and together they set out to find the key to reopening his world, whilst forming a bond of friendship neither has ever previously known. During their search, Dru learns Ty was no mortal man, but a god with a prophecy to fulfill. Ty died before fulfilling that prophecy, setting off a chain of events that would forever alter the future. Devastated, Dru abandons Aodh and the life that should have already been hers, and finds herself in the company of the worst sort. She begins a sordid affair with Kas, a daemon whose insatiable lust for power is only outdone by his lust for Dru. Separated from the only friend he knows, Aodh is left to search the world alone for answers. He meets the beautiful dancer, Katerina, and is instantly smitten. He stays near her, pretending to be mortal, gaining her friendship. On Katerina s birthday, just as Aodh is ready to concede to a life of mortality, Katerina is ripped from him by Kas. Aodh s ideas on remaining mortal are no more; he has to unlock the secrets to his world that will open a trove of unimaginable power to save the two women he loves, before time is no longer in his favour, and he loses everything.

Review

I believe I could pick up an unmarked manuscript and know if it was written by Dayna Von Thaer; she writes with a voice distinctly her own. In a day of carbon copy books (I just finished reading the same story published by two different houses and written by two different contemporary authors) it s refreshing to dig in to a story and find yourself thinking I ve never read anything like this. Von Thaer is also an author unafraid to throw herself out there. She unabashedly steals material from several different myths, throws it all into her imagination and comes out with an entertaining romp filled with humour and happy surprises. Yes, there are dark or horrific aspects to Von Thaer s work... Her Daemon is brutal, sadistic. People we care about suffer or die. But I can t call her work horror or even dark fantasy. If I had to be very specific, I would call Tuatha and The Seven Sisters Moon a fantasy thriller or a Modern Irish Myth. Her descriptive abilities are also to be lauded: each time I picked up the book I was immediately drawn back into Von Thaer's world.
--Clayton Bye, The Deepening

The second chapter really brings you into Katerina's world, which it would be mild to say that she lives a hard time. It is really easy for you to feel for her situation, and it's obvious that she has a past, but you don't get much information about her past. You do get little hints every now and again about Katerina's past, and when you do it makes you even more sad about whats going on with her life. Katerina is on the run from a life we can only imagine. And her escape is well planned and thought out, but at the same time it's so sad to watch, the terror in her actions shine through from the pages. She is one of those characters that you instantly identify with. It's rare for a character to do that with me, normally it takes more than a couple pages but for some reason she just pops right off the page and it is so easy to both love her and want her life to get better. Of course the course the characters take don't always stay on the path you think that you think they will go down. But that is part of what makes the story so interesting and entertaining... Overall, I am going to call this a good read. --Kate Steves, U Fantasy Reviews

I read this book in one night. I was amazed out how everything just fell into place and each character brought their own story. I laughed, I cried I even became very angry at times. I can not wait for the second book. I recommend this book to anyone who loves a great story and who cherishes books and the wonderful stories within them. This is one book I will have for years to come. --Belle Keat, author McKendrick Manor

About the Author

D. VonThaer was born the youngest of three in Niles, Ohio, and it's small-town charm and history nurtured a young girl's vivid imagination and intellect. At age twelve, she moved to Maryland where she also got her thirst for travel and a different way of life. During this time, she wrote extensively in diaries. It would be these journals that would later remind Dayna of her talent and passion, inspiring her to complete the first Tuatha book. At fifteen, she moved back home to Ohio to her ailing grandmother. After high school, she started courses at Kent State University. In 1995 she wed Eric, who had been her friend in school, the birthing of a phrase she oft uses; Always marry your best friend, cos above all, you re friends first. Later that year they left Ohio for Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. After only a year, they moved on to Virginia where they made a home and expanded their family. In 1999, they welcomed a second son, and Dayna continued her education whilst running a small marketing firm helping local businesses make the most of their staff. But even still, being a mum was always her first priority, and she spent the next few years volunteering at her local schools, food pantries, and other organisations. All the while, her love of writing simmered on the back burner, saved for rare moments of silence between laundry and playgroup. In 2003, Dayna and Eric welcomed their daughter into the world and as she said, an entirely new woman was born with the arrival of her little girl. Her writing came to the forefront again, as if the birth of her daughter had stirred up the dormant pot of her creativity. Grabbing any free moment possible, she started writing into the late hours of the night, creating stories and characters saved in blogs and notebooks. At age 29, feeling the need to do one thing for herself before hitting 30 (and deservedly so) she took a trip to London alone. Having loved it so much, her husband encouraged her to go a second time. It was during this trip that the inspiration for Tuatha was born. Later that year, Dayna lost her two best friends in an auto accident. Feeling a bit lost, Dayna and her family moved to London for a fresh start where she felt inspired by the language, culture, and architecture to work further on her books. Though they adored London, work dictated life differently, and her family moved back to America, taking her to Salem, Massachusetts further feeding her inspiration. Dayna continued her research whilst caring for her children. In 2009, a friend paid her visit, bringing her a box of old pages and unfinished manuscripts, including those from when she was only a twelve year old girl. Of these, her friend had taken the first complete journal she d ever written to read during his flight, not knowing it was her diary. He said he read it, but he didn't realise it was her diary until the very end. Presenting her with the box of things left unfinished and letters of encouragement from her husband, and dear friends, Dayna buckled down and focused on completing her book. Working constantly once all of her children were in school, and even during another move, she finished the first in the Tuatha series. Though agents showed interest in her work, she disagreed with their editing suggestions. Not wanting her work to turnforward personality, tenacity, and previously acquired skills at marketing to form B.A.S.E.D. Press, an independent small-press firm to publish her work so it may remain whole. The acronym is that of her family, an honour to them for their unwavering support. D lives in Texas with her husband and three beautiful children. That is, until she feels the need to change scenery once more.

Dayna was born late July, 1976 to German/Irish parents in Niles, Ohio. Also the birthplace of a U.S. President, it's small-town charm and history nurtured a young girl's vivid imagination. At age twelve, she moved to Maryland where she got her thirst for travel and a different way of life. During this time, she wrote extensively in diaries. It would be these journals that would later remind Dayna of her passion, inspiring her to complete the first Tuatha book.

At fifteen, she moved back home to Ohio to her ailing grandmother, and it is in her honor Dayna has chosen VonThaer as her pen name. She moved to Pittsburgh, immediately after high school, fueling her thirst for travel.

In 2003, Dayna and her husband welcomed their third child into the world and an entirely new woman was born with the arrival of her little girl. Her writing came to the forefront again, as if the birth of her daughter had stirred up the dormant pot of her creativity. At age twenty-nine, feeling the need to do one thing for herself before hitting thirty, she took a trip to London. Having loved it so much, her husband encouraged her to go a second time. It was during this trip that she met inspiration at Sunday dinner with friends.

Filled with inspiration and started the hefty task of not only writing a novel, but finishing it. She's traveled all over, having lived in Washington D.C., London, Boston and Dallas. She wrote the majority of Tuatha and the Seven Sisters Moon while in Salem, Massachusetts, inspired by it's dark history and bright future. The first in the Tuatha series debuts October 31, 2009.

This review is from: Tuatha and the Seven Sisters Moon (Paperback)
I really enjoyed this book. It was different. The characters were very colorful and interesting. I love a book that makes me want to learn more. After reading it, I looked up some of the mythology on the internet. It was so interesting. I highly recommend the book. It is a fun and easy read and you learn a little about mythology at the same time. I like a book that is enjoyable, interesting and where I can learn a little something. Look forward to the next one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitely Recommend, March 29, 2011
This review is from: Tuatha and the Seven Sisters Moon (Paperback)
I'm the type of reader who rereads books over and over again so it's rare for me to start a new book that I will really appreciate. This book amazed me and I couldn't put it down. It will definitely be added to my list of books that have kept me up until 4 in the morning because I just had to know what happened. The way I judge a book is how much it gets my emotions going. This book had me feeling so hopeful and sad and at points even got my blood boiling. It really is a gripping book and I have already sent copies to my sisters and friends.
