5.0 out of 5 stars Big "Tuba Sounds", June 4, 2011
This review is from: Tuba Sounds (Audio CD)
I've owned Ray Draper's "Tuba Sounds" for a decade, and in my attempts to review as many previously unreviewed OJC CD remaindered titles as possible, I just realized I had never bothered to comment on this disc back in the day. But I suppose it's easy to be neglected when you're a jazz tuba player. Draper first came to my attention on Max Roach's Deeds Not Words (see my review), but this is actually his debut from March 15, 1957, when he was all of 16! The young man is joined by another debutante in trumpeter Webster Young, a couple of then relative newcomers in bassist Spanky DeBrest and drummer Ben Dixon, and two jazz greats rounding out the sextet in Jackie McLean and Mal Waldron. This is a solid 50s hard bop blowing session, and with the tuba coming back in vogue thanks to The Roots and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, maybe someone will take a chance on this true jazz original.
