Book Description

July 30, 2006
New Orleans attorney Tony Dunbar’s lawyer-turned-sleuth Tubby Dubonnet is back, and this time, the city of New Orleans itself is endangered. Just when Tubby thought it was safe to come back to New Orleans, Hurricane Katrina boils up a rich gumbo of trouble for the unsuspecting lawyer in Tubby Meets Katrina.

Tubby rides out the storm okay—but then the levees break, the city floods, and he and thousands of other refugees end up in the hellish Convention Center. In the chaos, Tubby’s daughter finds herself targeted by an escaped psychopath, one who envisions himself the human embodiment of the hurricane. With no law enforcement to rely upon, Tubby must use his wits and his connections to protect himself and his family while trying to restore his home and help bring his beloved city back to life.

This fast-paced story includes incisive vignettes of the dangerous days just after Katrina hit and of the frustrating weeks that followed. Author Dunbar himself had to flee New Oleans to escape the storm, bringing a unique personal touch to his depictions. Combining real events with startling suspense, Tubby Meets Katrina is an important novel for anyone gripped by the Gulf Coast tragedy.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In Dunbar's odd seventh Tubby Dubonnet crime novel (after 2000's Lucky Man), the Katrina of the title is not the devastating storm but a psychopathic murderer, Bonner Rivette, who takes advantage of the chaos in New Orleans after the hurricane to escape from jail. Rivette abducts one of Dubbonet's daughters, declaring himself to be the personification of the hurricane. The Katrina debacle is fresh enough in the nation's consciousness that the vignettes of human suffering as well as the failures of government come across as pale shadows of news reports. The routine hunter and hunted plot fails to grip.

From Booklist

New Orleans lawyer Tubby Dubonnet is finally home after an extended stay in Bolivia. When he arrives at Louis Armstrong International Airport, he notes the CNN report on the massive hurricane making its way toward his home city. Ah, he thinks, just another seasonal inconvenience. As he heads for the welcome comfort of his modest abode, a psychotic killer named Bonner Rivette uses the confusion of the coming storm to escape his jailers. Looking for shelter, Bonner serendipitously makes his way to Tubby's high-rise office, where he hatches a plan to lure Tubby's daughter to the office under the guise of helping her injured father. She falls for the ruse and is held hostage. Tubby enlists the aid of his friends to execute a daring rescue, but Bonner is not done with either Tubby or his daughter. The seventh Dubonnet caper is a familiar blend of low-key humor and building suspense as Tubby battles both the storm and the elements to ensure the viability of both his family and his city. 5.0 out of 5 stars An interesting and realistic suspense story set in Post-Katrina New Orleans, June 5, 2006
This review is from: Tubby Meets Katrina: A Tubby Dubonnet Novel (Hardcover)
I picked up this book out of shear coincidence because I recognized the author's name as someone that I work with. I was a bit hesitant about reading the book at first because I lived through and lost as a result of Katrina and was concerned about reliving old memories. I can truly say that I am glad that I read this.

Tubby Dubonnet, the protagonist lawyer of Dunbar's series, has just arrived back in New Orleans right before Katrina hits the city. In the face of impending doom, Tubby decides to ride out the storm only to learn that shortly after the storm passes, the city begins to flood. At the same time, a psychopathic killer has escaped from a state prison and is on the loose in New Orleans. Eventually the paths of Tubby and the killer, who now calls himself 'Katrina' cross and the killer becomes infatuated with Tubby's daughter. The remainder of the story then deals with Tubby's drive to protect the ones that he loves from this madman.

What I found most gripping about the book was the description of the utter devestation and life in the city after the storm. From Tubby's visit to the New Orleans Convention Center where the masses awaited salvation, to his living in a warehouse on the outskirts of the city, to his trips through the streets of the city in a boat, all brought to life a very realistic vision of what life was like. Anyone who wants just a sampling of what happened should read this book.

I also found the character of Tubby to be interesting and well developed. I could easily picture this naive but intelligent and slightly oblivious man as he dealt with his problems. To make a comparison, I found him similar to Ignatius Reilly from A Confederacy of Dunces.

The book was both enjoyable and theraputic and is a definite must read. I rarely give a book five stars but the vividness and accuracy earned it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The quintessential Katrina book, July 25, 2006
This review is from: Tubby Meets Katrina: A Tubby Dubonnet Novel (Hardcover)
For all those who really want to know what it was truly like to be in New Orleans after Katrina, this is the quintessential novel that through fictional characters captures the emotion, struggle and agony of the situation like no other book yet published on the subject and this is coming from some one who was there and witnessed first hand. Not to be missed. Tony Dunbar is a diamond in the rough amoung writers. His style and story telling skills are among the best. Pass on Brinkley and pick up Dunbar. You won't be disappointed.
