Book Description

First World publication December 1, 2003
"Not many gothics get published these days, especially well-written ones, so it's a pleasure to read Tanner's...immensely skillful" Booklist on Morwennan House

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

When Flora's father, owner of Tucker's Grave Inn, is shot to death, his second cousin, Louis, inherits the tavern. For reasons known only to him, Louis forces Flora to move into Belvedere House with him and his antagonistic 13-year-old daughter, Antoinette. Flora reluctantly accepts her new life, gradually finding comfort in the company of Louis' charming younger brother, Gavin. But Flora's situation takes an unexpected turn when she inadvertently becomes involved with the Lynx, a Scarlet Pimpernel-type figure whose Brotherhood saves French aristocrats before the guillotine gets them. Once again, Tanner, author most recently of Morwenna House (2002), proves to be a master of the gothic genre as Flora finds herself in danger from an unknown source while she struggles to adjust to life in a strange mansion with a moody, enigmatic owner. Secret passages, underground tunnels, political intrigue, and cleverly disguised villains fill the pages with suspense. Fans of Baroness Orczy's Scarlet Pimpernel will find much to admire in this tale. Shelley Mosley
