Great Fun, July 26, 2010
This review is from: Tucson, Tubac, Tumacacori, Tohell (Hardcover)
This is a fun little book, easy to read and enjoy. It closes with a vignette of the border as it was 60 years ago, a world now long gone. The author writes well and tells the story with beauty and sympathy.
The author was the owner of the Pete Kitchen Museum near Nogales, AZ, a long time ago. He wrote the book to sell at the museum to tell people about Kitchen, a marvelous Arizona pioneer. Those who remember the TV show High Chaparral may know that it was loosely based on Kitchen. He fought the Apache for decades and lost his 12-year-old son to them. His house was a fortress with an armed guard on the roof.
The book is full of shoot outs, hidden treasures, local stories and mysteries. It does not reflect any great depth of research. The author lived with the legends for decades and he tells them well.
Today the old Stronghold is a Mexican restaurant. Inside the front door is a mural of three womean. They'll tell you that they were women Kitchen rescued from the Apaches. They are actually Pete's wife Dona Rosa and two nieces who lived at the ranch. The photo from which the mural was painted appears in the book.
