Another brilliant re-release from the Tallis Scholars,
By Sid Nuncius (London England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Tudor Church Music, Vol. 1 (Audio CD)
The Tallis Scholars have established themselves over the last 30-odd years as one of the world's greatest ensembles in Renaissance music. This double CD is the first in a two-volume set which includes some of their loveliest recordings taken from some of the wonderful discs they have made of the works of English composers of the Tudor period.
This volume comprises their absolutely sublime recordings of John Browne (one of my favourite CDs of all), the Western Wynde masses by Taverner and Tye, and motets by Taverner and Cornysh. All are lovely, featuring the high treble and great sonorities typical of the Tudor composers. There is a wealth of interest here and the music repays careful listening, but you can also lie back if you wish and just allow the waves of beautiful sound to wash over you. It's a wonderful musical experience however you listen to it. You can't go wrong with this set (or Volume 2) if you want introduction to Tudor church music or if you already know and love it and want really good recordings to add to your collection. I recommend these discs in the warmest terms.
