Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

Successive versions of Tudor Rebellions have been central to understanding Tudor politics since 1968, when Anthony Fletcher first published his book. Now nearly four decades later, Professor Diarmaid MacCulloch has once more thoroughly revised and expanded this classic text to take into account exciting and innovative work on the subject in recent years.

Written in a clear and accessible manner, the book:

  • gives a thorough account of the successive rebellions from the reign of King Henry VII through to the death of Queen Elizabeth in 1603
  • seeks to understand why Tudor people rebelled and what sort of people were inclined to do so
  • draws attention to ¿high¿ and ¿low¿ politics and takes seriously the political concerns of the humble and unprivileged alongside the nobility and gentry
  • provides a new account of the multiple disturbances of 1549: which now emerge as far more widespread and varied than was previously apparent

Also including a selection of primary source documents, Chronology and Who¿s Who of key figures, Tudor Rebellions provides an invaluable chronological account and analysis of the rebellions which affected the Kingdom of England between 1485 and 1603.

Anthony Fletcher was formerly a Professor of History at the University of Essex. Diarmaid MacCulloch is a Fellow of St. Cross College and Professor of the History of the Church at Oxford University.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good accounting of civil unrests of Tudor England., March 11, 2007

I found Tudor Rebellions to be a pretty interesting as well as informative book on the history of civil rebellions against the Tudor rulers from the reign of Henry VII to the death of Elizabeth I. Placed in a chronlogical order, this book bring to the light all the major and some of the minor rebellions that took place during that period. The book shows that in almost all cases, the revolts were very localized and have certain geographical limitation that made them failure in the long run. The book bring to light many of the more known rebellions into their proper perception.

I have read both 3rd and 5th edition of this book. The 5th edition obviously proves to be the one to owned and read as the 5th edition definitely expanded on this subject matter with greater detail and clarity. The good thing about this book is that for its short length, the book does great credits to bringing to light many known and unknown rebellions that for better or for worst, brought changes to their nation.

The book come highly recommended, its pretty well written, well researched and to the point. The writing style didn't bother me but it may distract some of the readers due to its "scholarly style" of narrative.
