Tuesdays return to 60's roots.,
By Grant Gaulke (Ohio, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Tuesdays (Audio CD)
I remember the first time I heard "It's Up To You". I was captivated by the jangly guitars and angelic voice of the lead singer. A few days later, I aquired the identity of the band. I picked it up the day it was released. To my joy were the girls pictured on the cover with their instrument cases. These were no Spice Girls wannabe's, but a full blown band. As for the music, there's not a single filler track on the CD. Every track is a stunner. Laila's vocals are the highlight of each track, with the guitars offering a distinctive contrast. For those who like melodic music with a lot of jangle in their guitars, this is a "MUST HAVE". "Take Me Home" is pure Beatles. "What Is Love" and "I Was Thinking Of You" show their rock side. If The Tuesdays have a Signature track, it would have to be "When You're A Tuesday Girl", The Tuesdays answer to The Spicegirls "Wannabe", a far inferior song. There is much to like on The Tuesdays CD. It has great music, great songs, and one of the best vocalists of the 90's. If you liked The Bangles or The Gin Blossoms, run, don't walk, to pick this beauty up. You'll be glad you did.

A Really Great, Fun, Female CD,
By
This review is from: The Tuesdays (Audio CD)
I got this cd about 3 years ago and have never gotten tired of it. It's light and fun and female powered and songs like "Its Up To You" and "Damn These Photgraphs" will have you humming them for days. The songs have heart and harmony. An excellent cd.

Among the distinctions that can be made about people, one is that there are those who demand originality, deep meaning and soul-stirring relevance from their music; on the other hand there are those who just like a bouncy tune because it makes them feel good. The Tuesdays are for the second, more well-adjusted, set. This is a compilation which borrows mightily from The Beatles - If Sandra Dee had married Paul in 1965, "It's Up To You" might have appeared on Rubber Soul. Dittos if it had been John for "I'll Be Here". Even though the style of "Too Late To Be Good" is admittedly generic, the integration of sounds and simple fun the song gives makes for a superior offering to those of us whose ears didn't just fall off the turnip truck. It will be interesting to see if this is a band that actually exists or is a studio creation - in any event, it's an easy bet that after you buy this disc, you'll replay it for one song or another within the first 5 samplings. It's a fun selection, well-produced and tight, with excellent road wearability.

First the Go-Go's, then the Bangles. Now we have the Tuesdays. What a great group with a great sound. Laila Samuels voice is perfect. The CD shows the group's range from fast upbeat songs such as "It's Up to You" to slow ballads like "Take Me Home". They are definitely a group to watch.

Still a favorite,
This review is from: The Tuesdays (Audio CD)
I, too, was taken by the jangly, Bangles-like sound of this band - and especially the lead vocalist who just happens to sound a lot like the Bangles' Susanna Hoffs. Grab this CD before it becomes impossible to find. I kept checking the official web site for news about the second album (the web site STILL says they haven't broken up, and the album is coming ... so much for timeliness). If, like me, you're starving for more, the following tidbit might be of interest. The lead vocalist, Laila Samuelsen (often trimmed to Samuels for the West) has had moderate success as a songwriter and backup vocalist, but at least a couple of times she has tried to make it as a solo artist. The last such effort was in 2005 with a promotional single called "I Guess U Guessed". It's more "adult contemporary" in style than the Tuesdays were, but VERY listenable; and any fan of the Tuesdays will recognize the voice instantly. Unfortunately, it seems to have gone nowhere; but here's the good news - you can download it for free. [...]

Yes, perhaps these ladies from Norway do sound a lot like the Bangles, but they do it so well! This is going to be one of those bands who didn't make it, broke up, leaving behind one blasting set for music hunters to enjoy. "What Is Love" is a strong rock anthem with slashing guitar licks and Laila Samuels' vocals holding the stage. My favorite track is what was the single, "I'll Be Here." It's got a slower grinding groove and a great melody with Samuels again nailing the vocal, "When dreams seem far away do yesterdays keep haunting you? Do they bring you down? Well life can seem unfair." Yes, it's sentimental, but it is a great track. Other songs show some sense of humor like on "I Was Thinking of You" about an unfaithful girlfriend who tries to make her affair seem a bit more acceptable. Sometimes great bands don't make it and the music biz can seem unfair. The Tuesdays is a great rocking set that is worth seeking out. Enjoy!

Pop Brilliance,

Extremely catchy from the start. The best tracks include Take Me Home, Thinking Of You, It's Up To You & Changing The Moods. They also do a great cover of "Wheels" by Enuff Z'Nuff. Watch out for Laila Samuels in the future. She has one of the best voices in pop music today.

THE TUESDAYS: GIRL POWER EXTREME!,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Tuesdays (Audio CD)
In early 1998, I heard The Tuesdays' first hit, IT'S UP TO YOU, on the radio. Immediately, I had the desire to add a copy of their self-titled debut albums to my ever-growing cassette collection. And, about six months later, I had fulfilled that aforementioned desire! The Tuesdays' self-titled debut album was the best "girl power" album I had ever owned a cassette copy thereof! I'd give it LOTS of stars, if it were up to me! Yes, I definitely recommend it--and I'm quite sure The Tuesdays will produce a SECOND album before long.

Wonderful Pop Music,

The Tuesday ladies sure know how to take an old-fashioned styled American pop rhythm and craft it into something European, something bright, and something altogether new, yet never losing the root from which it stemmed. Samuels voice is nothing less than stunning and you can swear that even if she were to release "Mary Had a Little Lamb" as the band's next single, you'd be right out there buying it!!!What can I say, as a product of the synth-box 80's, I don't like today's "hit-alternative, MTV, 14 year-old" rubbish that is being manufactured faster than shoes in Indonesia, so I usually don't look at anything that's been newly released...ah-hem...except for these ladies. Fantastic. Norway looks to be aiming for the stars in the near future...with the new a-ha CD due out this fall (my favs!!!) and a NEW Tuesdays CD around Christmas (hopefully!!!). WOW!!! Take a listen.

These tunes make me feel good!,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Tuesdays (Audio CD)
One of the few new artists who know how to keep the Roll in Rock! Obviously highly influenced by The Beatles, The Tuesdays have the freshest sound I've heard in a long time. I hate to admit this, but I am a harsh critic of the vast majority of "hits" we've been exposed to since the advent of disco nearly a quarter of a century ago. So it was a delightful surprise when I was first exposed to the sound of the Tuesdays during a shopping trip. "I'll Be Here" was on the Muzak. I immediately stopped in my tracks. This song had what it took to grab me. From the vows of a woman in love to the Beatlesque music that drove the song. It took me about a week to discover the identity of the artists. The Tuesdays are young ladies from Norway who manage to stitch two generations of music together seamlessly (while skipping the clutter between). The lyrics are a strange mix of early Sixties naiveté with today's sensibilities and the music is a large batter of Beatles with a pinch of this and that thrown in. Tom Petty and The Byrds come to mind with the first two cuts on the CD, "Too Late To Be Good" and "It's Up to You". Tasty instrumentation and an "in the pocket" rhythm section make drive these two bouncy rockers. These two tunes are indicative of what is to come. Eight or nine of the songs would make great singles, especially the ballads, "Changing the Mood" and "Take Me Home". It's been a long time since I was able to put a CD on and let it play from start to finish without a misstep. The song that stands out to me is the tune that pulled me into the fold, "I'll Be Here". This is The Tuesday's "Lucy In the Sky". I love their penchant for using the music to tell part of the story. When Laila sings the line, "Hope you read me loud and clear," the keys take on a telegraph cadence. Be this purely a production insert or a musician's instinct, the existence of that singular event tells me someone cares enough to use subtlety and finesse. These five women aren't pre-programmed pop divas, these are musicians. They each have a distinctive sound and look. The cover shows they each have a natural beauty and sex appeal without the glamour and gloss. The Tuesdays are telling us the music comes first. Good for them. I hope they can keep it going. If I could say only one thing to these musicians it would be . . . "Don't ever let a record company executive talk you into giving up your independence. You have the talent and personality to evolve. Do what it takes to keep the music fresh without losing the heart of the song." And the heart of your songs make me feel good. 'Nuff Said!
