Product Description

Editorial Review

This durable little unit packs in a lot of functions, all of them eminently kid-friendly. Most basically, it’s a tape player that can be easily operated with big, colorful buttons, but it’s also a kind of karaoke machine, letting kids use the included microphone to sing along with the music, or sing a cappella. As if that wasn’t enough, there are multiple settings to warp your voice to sound like a monster, robot, bunny, or Martian. You might have to use your imagination to hear how some of the settings sound like what they’re supposed to (and what does a bunny sound like anyway?), but once you start experimenting with Voice Warp, it’s addictive fun even if you’re a big person. Don’t worry though, you can turn the filter off to hear your normal voice. --David Stoesz

5.0 out of 5 stars Durable, easy-to-operate, and loaded with features., December 28, 2002

I purchased the Tuff Stuff Tape Recorder for my 6 yr. old daughter. She LOVES it. This product is absolutely perfect. Not only is it tough and durable, but it makes operating it very easy and self-explanatory for the kids.

Its large buttons are color coded with illustrations on them to indicate their use. The STOP button is red, the PLAY button is green. There is even an illustration inside the cassette area to indicate which way to insert the tape.

The microphone is a big hit with the kids. They can slide a lever to change their voices to sound like an alien, chipmunk, monster, or robot. They can even record themselves. The voice-change feature is best used while the child is wearing headphones. Only the child can hear the voice-change, which can be a great benefit for tired parents.

This tape recorder features a port for a 6-volt AC adaptor (not included) and a port for headphones (also not included). This player operates on 4 C batteries, which ARE included.

The only different thing about this player is the fact that one must hold down the forward or rewind button. I believe that this was intentional and is a way of saving on the batteries and the life of the cassettes. Either way, it's a very minor thing.

If you're looking for a good first tape player, then this is the right one. It's inexpensive, backed by the Fisher Price reputation for quality, and has all the features you could possibly want. I am totally satisfied with this product and would recommend it to anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazingly durable and versatile, July 13, 2003

Our FP tape player has survived almost 3 years of toddler hardships and our daughter still listens to a story tape (or more) every day. Seems to be in fine working order despite the dragging up and down stairs by the microphone, etc. Also, the batteries seem to last a surprisingly long time.

I'm adding this bit on years later: the version we bought 6 yrs ago still works fine! Hope the manufacturing is still the same.

My Parents got this for my 19 month old son and he loves it. Like one other reviewer said, it has my son talking. He has been dragging it around the house ever since he got it. He loves music so, I requested a tape player but this is much better. I think it would be a great toy for the budding singer or jokester of the family. Even the adults were having a great time! The voice warps are hilarious. The martian is our favorite! Great toy! Enjoy!
