3.0 out of 5 stars Cute, but prefer older style
My 5 year old son has the earlier blue and white model. It has been used and used and is still running great. My 3 year old daughter wanted one, and her brother would not share, so we went searching. All we could find is this current model, so this is the one that she has. The voice warping is fun, but seldom used. The unit is very heavy for a small child to carry...

I purchased the Tuff Stuff Tape Recorder for my 6 yr. old daughter. She LOVES it. This product is absolutely perfect. Not only is it tough and durable, but it makes operating it very easy and self-explanatory for the kids.

Its large buttons are color coded with illustrations on them to indicate their use. The STOP button is red, the PLAY button is green. There is even an illustration inside the cassette area to indicate which way to insert the tape.

The microphone is a big hit with the kids. They can slide a lever to change their voices to sound like an alien, chipmunk, monster, or robot. They can even record themselves. The voice-change feature is best used while the child is wearing headphones. Only the child can hear the voice-change, which can be a great benefit for tired parents.

This tape recorder features a port for a 6-volt AC adaptor (not included) and a port for headphones (also not included). This player operates on 4 C batteries, which ARE included.

The only different thing about this player is the fact that one must hold down the forward or rewind button. I believe that this was intentional and is a way of saving on the batteries and the life of the cassettes. Either way, it's a very minor thing.

If you're looking for a good first tape player, then this is the right one. It's inexpensive, backed by the Fisher Price reputation for quality, and has all the features you could possibly want. I am totally satisfied with this product and would recommend it to anyone.

Our FP tape player has survived almost 3 years of toddler hardships and our daughter still listens to a story tape (or more) every day. Seems to be in fine working order despite the dragging up and down stairs by the microphone, etc. Also, the batteries seem to last a surprisingly long time.

I'm adding this bit on years later: the version we bought 6 yrs ago still works fine! Hope the manufacturing is still the same.

My Parents got this for my 19 month old son and he loves it. Like one other reviewer said, it has my son talking. He has been dragging it around the house ever since he got it. He loves music so, I requested a tape player but this is much better. I think it would be a great toy for the budding singer or jokester of the family. Even the adults were having a great time! The voice warps are hilarious. The martian is our favorite! Great toy! Enjoy!

We own the regular Tuff Stuff Tape Recorder and it has gone through 3 rough boys. My boys are 5, 3 and 2 years old and they play with this toy every day. We take it on vacation ( with earphones, of course) and everyone is entertained. I purchase CDs, then record their favorite songs on cassettes. Then when the cassettes get messed up, recorded over (with their own voices), or lost, I can make another copy. This recorder gets thrown around and pulled around by the microphone and it still works!!!! This was a very smart purchase for us!!!

My 2 year old just received this for his birthday and he loves it! My other son (who's 3) loves it even more. I'll have to get another one so they won't fight over it. So far it's been dropped off the sofa (onto hardwood floors) and dragged around by the microphone and it still works. Not to mention the tug-of-war between both my sons using the tape recorder. Even Dad and I enjoy playing with it! The only thing is the button on the microphone, my kids haven't figured out that they have to push it AND talk at the same time in order to hear themselves in the different voices. But that won't take long for them to learn!
Update 3 years later: This recorder didn't last long. After purchasing another one for my youngest son, they both lasted about 2 months before finally dying. The microphone cord just couldn't withstand the tug-of-wars and the cassette holder lost the pieces that lock it in place during operation. It was fun while it lasted!

All we could find is this current model, so this is the one that she has. The voice warping is fun, but seldom used. The unit is very heavy for a small child to carry. The 2 side handles are awkward to hold.

My daughter likes to listen to lullaby music at night. We have had trouble with the play button sticking. When we wake up in the morning, the batteries are dead. We have spent more on batteries than on the player! She likes to keep the player on her bed, so that she can turn her tapes over. We have never had a problem with this until tonight. I went in to check on her and found that the microphone cord was wrapped around her neck twice! She was fine, but just a word of caution, do not let your child use this on their bed.

Overall, a good tuff product. Heavy, and heavy duty. Uses lots of batteries.

Update: I contacted Fisher Price about the problem with the play button sticking. They sent a new unit at no cost. The very first night we used it, the button stuck. In the morning, the batteries were dead. It has been very frustrating. I guess that we will have to plug in with an adaptor. I still like the old model best.

Whatever makes em happy is my MOTTO - the boys 2 1/2 and 5 LOVE this thing. They drop it on the floor, THROW it into the toy box abuse the heck out of it and it keeps on going! I paid $20 2 years ago for mine, and I'll tell ya - There's not many 20 dollar items that last that long in this house! Between cousins and friends and the 2 boys that live here the toys get used and abused. MY ONLY complaint with this thing (other than the screech if you hold the mic too close to the recorder) is that YOU CANNOT HEAR TAPES...strange but true! You turn it WAY up and you can hardly hear a tape playing. The kids don't care however - they just want to hear themselves anyway! HOPE THIS HELPS SOMEBODY.

After my little boy played with this toy in the toy store, he kept asking for it. Thankfully Santa brought it to him a few weeks later on Christmas. Everyone in the family has had so much fun with it (yes, including my husband and I.) Come to think of it, almost everyone who comes to visit has fun with it. It's surprising that it hasn't gone through more batteries. I even use it as a tape player for night time (I don't have to worry about him getting hurt or breaking this one) to play lullabye tapes to help him fall asleep.
