Tug of War is an album only a young person could have produced, and I mean that as a compliment.

Carly Rae Jepsen's debut, brings a mix of songs filled with the exuberance of youth. Of the time when we still knew how to have fun, and love was a new and overwhelming emotion.

Although the lyrics are not entirely there yet, Carly Rae Jepsen's voice really sells them. Whether she's taking you to a day at the beach with "Bucket", or conveying the feeling of being lost in someone else's world with "Heavy Lifting". She can easily lift you up, or whisper you to tears.

"Tug of war" the title track it's already getting a lot of airplay, as well as her take of John Denver's "Sunshine on my Shoulders". They, along with the rest of the tracks, are melodically crafted with such a great competence as to making them irresistible.

I simply loved this debut effort, and I'm looking forward to a lot of great things from CRJ in the future.

Why is this album so hard to find, and why is it so expensive? I have listened to samples of the tracks, but cannot find the album. The samples sound very good and I would purchase this album if it were sold in stores, and was not so costly. I like what I hear; however, if I could hear the whole album I might love it. Carly Ray is so personable and happy. She seems to enjoy entertaining for the people.
I enjoyed her very much on Idol.

I did not know who Carly Rae Jepsen was until, "Call Me Maybe." and "It's Always A Good Time" (she did with Owl City). I am sorry for this fact because this album is very good. My favorite songs on the album (in order) are "Bucket," "Sour Candy," "Sunshine," "Tug Of War," and "Hotel Shampoos."
This album is not like her new stuff on the radio, but it is Great music... well written, beautiful melodies, marvelous vocals, and a unique and enjoyable style of enunciation. If I had to assign it a specific declension of Pop, I'd say this album is Folk-Pop akin to Michelle Branch, who I also like. "Bucket" is a catchy, upbeat song about how life happens and we just have to deal with it; when life gives you lemons, make the best @#$% lemonade they've ever tasted. "Sour Candy" is a wonderfully beautiful synthesis of everything I am growing to really like about CRJ's voice mixed with a song WORTHY OF REPEAT. "Sunshine" is a uniquely pretty tune that, does ironically enough (lyrics explain), put a smile on your face and, in my case gives me a craving to go to the beach, which may have been put there by "Bucket." Finally, "Tug of War" and "Hotel Shampoos" are a delightful mix of melancholy emotion with a tenacious craving for change that makes the listener really feel empathy for the singer (CRJ).
I think this album had the potential to make it big, it was just released at the wrong time or wasn't well promoted. I really hope people go back and experience the roots of one of the most popular artists on the radio right now.
I have pre-ordered "Kiss" (her new album) on good faith of this album and the two songs on the radio CRJ has done and am sure I will not be disappointed.
Thanks to Carly RJ and her label for this great album... keep them coming.Tug of War

It all depends on what type of music you like. One reviewer mentioned that her daughter said this album was less "fake" (produced) than the Kiss album, but I don't think that's the difference. This album is just a different music style. It's not really "dance" style and the Kiss album is VERY dance. This one was so slow in places that it put me to sleep. Her voice is lovely and the songs are well done, but I didn't really care for it and it has nothing to do with it being "produced" or not. I'm hoping that a least one or two of the songs will grow on me and I'll start liking it or them, but so far, it's just an average listen. I'm going to go ahead and listen to it a few more times and see if I like it any better.

I'm glad I purchased this when I did because it got a lot harder to find as soon as her Kiss album was announced and scheduled for release. My 13 year old daughter has really enjoyed listening to Carly's earlier work, especially now that it is a rarer album in her collection. She says it is not as "fake" (read: produced) as a lot of other CD's she listens to.

I discovered this other album by newcomer Carly Rae Jepsen sometime last Christmas since I really enjoyed her 2012 mega smash, "Call Me Maybe." This is Carly Rae's 2008 debut, and it's drastically different than what you might be used to hearing. It's much more relaxed and acoustic. She uses some tongue-in-cheek lyrics on the chorus of the title track. Although I much preferred her 2012 hits laden follow-up album, "Kiss", I would still recommend this album to serious Carly Rae Jepsen fans. It's not to be missed. :)
