Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review
Anyone who has witnessed the blinding spring beauty of a tulip field in full bloom can understand the devotion that this colorful flower inspires. From its origins as a wildflower of central Asia, it's captured the hearts of gardeners and collectors for 500 years. Millions of bulbs are cultivated throughout Europe, Australia, the U.S., and Japan each year; there are now more than 3,000 named varieties in every shade of the rainbow except blue and black. Tulips shows off many of the more unusual types, and highlights the flower's fascinating history, which rivals that of most gemstones for tales of incredible fortunes made and lost. Some readers may be surprised to hear that all parts of the tulip are edible, and the back of the book includes several tips for adding color to fruit salads and desserts, as well as instructions for craft items such as tulip-stenciled place mats and a tulip-print lampshade. With a small package of bulbs, it would make an especially wonderful autumn gift for any plant lover.

Product Description

4.0 out of 5 stars A Celebration of Tulips but no planting advice......, October 3, 2000
While I purchased this book thinking it would help me learn about planting tulip bulbs, I didn't find any planting information. What I did find was still equally enjoyable. I learned that my favorite flower once grew wild in central Asia. I also found a creative idea for a "Tulip Ice Bowl." There is a short history of tulips and Chris Mead's photography captures the free, optomistic and swaying in the breeze life of the tulip.

If you are looking for a house warming gift, this would be so well received with a bunch of fresh tulips. When I look at this book, it reminds me of visiting LaConner, Washington for the Tulip Festival.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lovely Tulips, May 12, 2000
By Wat Ka Yan (Hong Kong) - See all my reviews
If you are a lover of tulips, you should buy this book even though it may be a bit expensive. There are lots of beautiful pictures showing different species of tulips. When you see those pictures, you will want to have all of them. This book also told you the history of tulips. From it, I learnt that tulip was so attractive and popular in Europe since the sixteen century. Even a miller was willing to sell his mill for one rare bulb of tulip. How crazy he loved tulip! This book taught you how to plant tulips. I have planted one before. It's wonderful to see my own tulip growing and growing. If you want to have such unforgetable experience, this book really helps you. I didn't think that tulip bulbs can be added an interesting crunch to salads, cakes etc. Their colour enhances any dish. There were two recipes teaching you how to make use of tulips with your food. It's fantastic and amazing. It's better to buy this book if you want to know more about tulips.
