About the Author
Illustrator: Kay Salem
Before becoming a free-lance artist and illustrator, Kay worked for the Lifemark Corporation, painting murals in lobbies, waiting rooms, and on children's floors of hospitals throughout the South. She has designed the covers of several book series and has created advertising art for Coca-Cola Foods, Anheuser Busch, Frito-Lay and Bennigans.
Kay has illustrated several children's books, including Tumbleweed Tom on the Texas Trail, written by Jackie Hopkins (Charlesbridge, 1994) and California Here We Come! and ¡California, aquí vamos! (Charlesbridge, 1997), written by Pam Munoz Ryan.
Kay enjoys playing her guitar, painting, drawing, and sketching. She has lived in Texas all her life Author: Jackie Hopkins
Born in Tyler, Texas, Jackie Hopkins resides in Houston, where she is a media specialist in the Cypress-Fairbanks school system. Jackie is the author of Tumbleweed Tom on the Texas Trail (Charlesbridge, 1994). She said that she was inspired to write this book because, "there were no books available for younger children about the great state of Texas."

Great teaching tool,

I used this book in my 2nd grade class as we did a real short unit on Texas. My students and I took a "field trip" all across Texas. Tom travels through the Lonestar state collecting various Texas treasures. I loved this book and my class really enjoyed it also. It's a great way to teach the symbols of Texas.
