5.0 out of 5 stars This is not Bel Canto, September 13, 2004

This review is from: Tundra (Audio CD)
Anneli branched out on her own, and it shows in this album. A fellow reviewer of this album did not like it, because it doesn't contain the "magical" sound of Bel Canto. I agree, it doesn't, and that is part of what makes this album great.

Anneli has proven to me that she can hold her own and put out wonderful music. This album is very poppy, however, so if you are not a fan of pop music, I wouldn't recommend it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Anneli Drecker goes solo, November 15, 2010
This review is from: Tundra (Audio CD)
The first solo album from vocalist of the Norwegian band Bel Canto is full of personal melodic songs. The crystal clear enigmatic voice backed by strings orchestrated by the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra creates an intimate narration of the tundra experience. The album opens with "All I Know"- a hymn to loneliness and lost love and song after song keeps building images of cold and harsh but stunningly beautiful landscape. Through the teasing dream pop of "Sexy Love" and title track "Tundra" delivered by Anneli Drecker in Lappish to the painful ballad "Woebegone" based on the poem "A Song" by Abai Kunanbayev and the tiny irresistible "It's All In Here", all songs on this album are like sprouts of hope in the howling wind, the cold and loneliness of the Arctic. Another highlight is the dramatically moving "Song Of The Sky Loom", recorded live at a concert in Tromsų. "Then weave for us a garment of brightness - may the warp be the white light of morning - may the weft be the red light of evening - may the fringes be the falling rain - may the border be the standing rainbow", prays Drecker to the Arctic god. And on the tundra you go...

3.0 out of 5 stars The great tundra, September 16, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Tundra (Audio CD)
I've been listening to Bel canto's music for some time now and i've got all of their albums. When i found out that Anneli has made her own inbetween , i thought i had to have this album and so i did.
No doubt , that Anneli wants to make a norwigian Bjork out of her, but she's far much poppy than Bjork. The album goes through pop , dance , r&b , rock , jazz together with world influences, wich Anneli likes to do. I think she has a very unique and hunting voice and vocal style and that she's very talented lady , both in singing as in writing , compesing and prouducing her music , but i think she's too poppy . Plus , the album doesn't have the Magical Bel canto feel to it. However , this is a good album , after all and i'd reccomend this not only to Bel canto's fans , but also to anyone who likes melodic and expirimental music , who's not afraid to say that pop sensibility can be a very good thing.
