Editorial Reviews

Product Description

On Tune thy Musicke to thy Hart, the choral ensemble Stile Antico, joined by the acclaimed viol consort Fretwork, explores a long- neglected repertory: the wealth of Tudor and Jacobean sacred music written for domestic devotion, rather than for church worship. Culled from collections intended for use in private homes, these pieces by Tomkins, Campion, Byrd, Tallis, Dowland, Gibbons and others, offer a unique insight into the turbulent religious climate of the time and the thriving musical culture at its heart. The
album features a capella and accompanied vocal works framed by instrumental solos played by Fretwork.

Review

Another triumph for the superb Stile Antico ensemble and Fretwork. --The Observer

The beautifully blended voices of Stile Antico give this music with all the intensity that its emotional content merits. But then every work here fairly burns itself on the heart. --The Sunday Times

This richly appealing new release by the excellent vocal ensemble Stile Antico offers a tour through the range of this tradition. And what's immediately striking, aside from the sheer beauty and fastidiousness of the music, is the stylistic range that's encompassed here. --San Francisco Chronicle

Format: Audio CD
This is another excellent disc from Stile Antico, this time of performances of smaller scale works for private worship dating from roughly 1500 to 1630. These are all settings of English texts rather than Latin settings and are more intimate works than many of their previous recordings. In addition, they are joined by the brilliant viol consort Fretwork who play with them on some of the sung pieces and contribute two instrumental In nomines of their own.

Although the repertoire gives this disc a rather different in feel from their previous five releases, what remains constant is the excellence of the performance. The ensemble's blend and balance is as beautiful as ever and their tuning technical mastery remains impeccable. The fact that they sing without a conductor but, as the notes tell us, "rehearse and perform as chamber musicians" gives a wonderful engagement with both music and text and the sense of private devotion is palpable throughout the disc. Fretwork, as ever, are superb and bring a depth and variety which really enhances the whole programme, and the intimate recorded sound makes the most of the wonderful performances here.

With good notes, full texts and very attractive presentation, this is a terrific disc all round and is very warmly recommended.

Sometimes when superstars get together, the sum doesn't live up to the parts. But with this disc, it equals them, and at times far surpasses. The combination of two of my favorite groups, Fretwork and Stile Antico is brilliant in every respect. The recording is outstanding, with sonics that put you in the space. And the playing and singing are absolutely first rate.
I just love Tudor and Jacobean music, and the selections are wonderful. I can't recommend this disc enough.
Enjoy!

My musical library spans through almost every category, save for hip-hop, John Cage and Mongolian throat singing... oh, wait a second, I do have a collection of Mongolian throat singing come to think of it. On any given day, you could find me starting off the day with some Charlie Parker, moving on to Frightened Rabbit and then easing into the evening with the latest from Boards of Canada. So, where might something like 17th century polyphonic devotional music fit into this mix? The answer is: anywhere! Since taking delivery of this ethereal beauty, I've listened to it upon waking, driving to our work studio, working out (yes, working out!) and, of course, to wind down at the end of the day. Prior to this purchase, my only other real exposure to the genre was with the equally gorgeous recordings from the Swedish/Norwegian group, Trio Medieval. But something in their sparse arrangements leaves you wanting more, of course, since we only get three voices and no instrumental accompaniment. Those recordings, beautiful as they are, have the tendency to fatigue; Stile Antico bears repeated listenings, as I find myself hitting the 'repeat' function often. The hidden gems on this disc from the viol consort "Fretwork" are a real treat as well. My highest recommendation.

I am not a fan of early music but this disc also has a hard bright metallic edge to the sonics. Am I the only person hearing that edge? It makes the disc almost unlistenable.

I have a few discs by the group "Stile Antico" as well as a few discs of "Fretwork", so I was excited to have them both together and in hybrid SACD multichannel. I think that this music is more accessible to some who like classical music, but aren't as familiar with early music or interested in large sacred choral works. Stile Antico is not small, but provide a an approach that doesn't overwhelm the music's intent for personal devotion or the viols.
