Half of Sonny Stitt's seventies resurgence.,

This review is from: Tune-Up! (Audio CD)
This was the session that brought Stitt back into the jazz public's consciousness after the decade of the sixties, a time when the music as a whole was down (way down) and Sonny was playing simple blues on tenor with his Varitone attachment supported by Hammond B3. "Tune-Up" was quickly followed by "Constellation," which I personally have a slight preference for because of the presence of Roy Brooks on drums.
Unless you find a good copy of either LP, the better bet is the compilation CD "Endgame Brilliance." But the surest thing is the compilation CD produced in 2007 by Fresh Sounds, which is a marvelous transfer with first-rate packaging and documentation. The problem is that it isn't available at Amazon (litigation problems?). Simply Google it and order it from the Spanish distributor. |
