Raw, Lively Fiddle Music,
By Emily (MA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Tunes Until Dawn (Audio CD)
This album gives new life to the wonderful Cape Breton fiddle style, using all traditional elements in these beautiful tunes. Greenberg, MacPhee, and the several other musicians who appear on the album are immensely talented such that the moment you begin to listen it evokes a raw sense of an older time and pure musical exhileration. Trust me on this one. OK, so that sounded flowery, but the point is that this album is the opposite: the instrumentation is perfectly simple although the music itself can be fascinatingly complex. This is REAL music, music that sounds like a village dance in the old town hall or any other such traditional-and-colorful image that comes to mind for you. OK, that was cheezy to, but the tunes are not. They are high-spirited with such INTEGRITY that at some point you've got to get up and dance. Favorites? I love most every track, but especially "Mary Gary," "Welcome Sara Malaney," "Compliments to Annabelle," "Delvin Slide," "Togo Farewell" (truly beautiful), "Corporal AB" (very intersting and almost a canon) and "Joe's Favorite" (a downright great dance tune). In short, if you're looking for the perfect introduction to traditional fiddle styles OR a great album to add to your collection, I recommend this one extremely highly. I love every track on here, each brings something slightly different to this exciting album packed with musical integrity.

A beautiful album, with a wide range of Cape Breton fiddle and piano pieces. Truly rapture to listen to.
