Alternate history can be a lot of fun if you do it right. Harry Harrison does it right in his "Tunnel Through the Deeps." This story originally appeared in "Analog" magazine as the serial, "A Transatlantic Tunnel, Hurrah! (a much superior title in my humble opinion)"

This is the story of the building of the Transatlantic Tunnel from England to her American Colonies. For those readers old enough to remember the 1970s, they may remember that the chief engineer on the project was Captain Gus Washington. They will also remember the excellent job he did (despite being the direct descendant of the traitor George Washington who led a rebelion a couple of hundred years ago).

Definitely a good read and one that should be reprinted.
