4.0 out of 5 stars Tunnels -- Full of Action and Adventure, July 29, 2008
This review is from: Tunnels (Hardcover)
I'm a 6th grade teacher, and so I often read the books that I think my students will enjoy. I didn't know anything about this book before I picked it up, but boy, am I glad I read this one. A fresh idea and twists and turns at every corner will keep you turning the pages of this book. Even though the intended audience is the 11+ crowd, I found that I couldn't put it down. It was a bit slow to start, but once all the introductory features were out of the way, it picked up pace and really kept moving. It's got action, adventure, suspense, death....all the things that kids of this age group enjoy in a novel. The end of the book will have you clamorning for the next one, as the story is definitely NOT concluded at the end of this book. Kudos to Gordon and Williams. This is a piece of children's literature that will keep them coming back for more!

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome, February 8, 2011
This review is from: Tunnels (Hardcover)
Few books that I have read were as compelling and addictive as this one, and with 3 more published in the series and a 5th on the way, it will provide many more hours of entertainment. This book was hard to put down. I just kept saying to myself as reading, one more section, one more chapter, and yet kept reading when I should have put it down. I had to stop reading it at work because I would not want my break or lunch to end. The story is fast paced, the plot twists uncanny, the characters incredibly interesting and the concept chilling.

Will Burrows (pun intended I am sure) is obsessed with archaeological digs, a passion his father has encouraged. His father is the curator at the local museum and dreams of finding something to put his academic career back on track. But they dig in secret, hiding their tunnels and their finds. Will works on projects for his father but also has his own side digs in areas of interest for himself. And in some ways he feels more at home underground than above. But when his father goes missing, and Will discovers a mysterious tunnel and journal, he and his friend Chester go digging, looking for Dr. Burrows. What they find will surprise them and just might cost them their lives.

The greatest strength of the story is the uniqueness of the story line. The plot is so enticing. Discovering an underground world and civilization is not a new plot, but how this one came about, and its interactions with topsiders, is unique and fascinating. Overall it was an excellent read and I cannot wait to read more books in the series. (Note this book was originally published as The Highfield Mole.)

5.0 out of 5 stars asome book to read, December 18, 2008
This review is from: Tunnels (Hardcover)
Review, on tunnels

I say that tunnels can be a vary action packed that you will love this book. The story is based on a boy named, Will. He is a boy how is looking for his father, and his family is like; they are all separated in family. Will discovers of an evil culture, beneath him. "Will is my personal favored character in this book."
I would suggest that you read this book if you like fantasy and science, because this book has a lot of this. This book is a kind of funny in some parts. If you like a lot of mysteries this book would be best for you. Tunnels have a boy named Chester that will like. Chester and will look out for each other. Tunnels are taking place in London. Will is going to lose something vary preshish to him. There is a fourteen-year-old boy named Will Burrows he lives in the suburbs of London with his family that are vary strange. His mother is planted in front of the T.V every hour. His younger sister takes all the responsibility of all the parental chores. Will is a definitely an individual that follows his father interesting in archeology. His dad was searching for a past civilization that had long forgotten one thing the family members do have in common is that they are all rather reclusive and introverted, preferring to spend time by him or herself, or, in the case of father and son, with each other. . Will remains solitary is his classroom and class mates. His very pale skin and almost white hair make him the victim of bullies at school. Then a huge event erupts, and Will is extra thankful for a friend. The police ask questions but find no leads at all. Some begin to accept that Mr. Burrows is gone, but not Will, who takes it upon himself to look for clues.
About the author, Brian Williams was never recorded his birth he live in London. Grew up in, Chingola, Zambia and Liverpool, UK. He was a class clown when he was in school. He wanted to grow up to be a saint, an astronaut or a gangster. He said, "Everything I've ever done up to now." And also, "I can't ever remember beginning to write - it's something I've always done."
Roderick Gordon was born in the 1960. He lives in Norfolk. How is vary shy ,and he wonted to be when he grew up to be, doctor, a scientist, a philosopher, a musician, a commando or a master spy! After he left school he went to University, then had lots of jobs before working in the city. He begins to write out of frustration with himself, and needed to be heard! He would describe his books a kind of thing that he might just like to happen.
