Editorial Reviews

Review

"As more is bought and sold through the Fed the more Phillips' scenario seems plausible.Turban Tan is a page turner, and a book that makes you wish you had a more direct line to the president. Dear Mr. Obama, I have a book you need to read!" -- Jason Behrends, What to Wear to an Orange Alert.

Product Description

The CIA has been dissolved. A new agency has formed. Espionage plays a valuable role in the business world of 2032. The excavation of resources is driven not by free enterprise but by the desperation to sustain those who serve in protection of the stock piled wealth of a corporate monarchy. The Drippy Man becomes a centrifugal outsider on the inside as the words from The Dry Advisor take shape in his understanding during the course of his next assignment. Betrayal in a stagnant, monopolized economy is as commonplace as the fitful wind.

Mr. Phillips is a stand out in the self-publishing scene. I came across his first book, Whiskey Pike, last year and was eagerly taken back in time and amerced in the world he created. I was very interested to see how his journey into the future, Turban Tan, would compare and I was blown away! No sophomore slump here. I am looking forward to his next effort.

This was a thoroughly enjoyable read for the weekend. Its is a suspense thriller based in the year 2032 and is written like a movie with plenty of drama. However beyond everything the author has a message for the reader which unfolds gradually as you go deeper into it - a message to speak up for the cause of freedom and justice of individuals over the power of greed and exploitation. A highly recommended book.

Turban Tan is a thought-provoking novella about a futuristic society over taken by big business, greed, and money. It really makes you ponder about the possibilities in our ever changing political society. It is both captivating and timeless, because political uncertainty will never go out of style. Phillips' take on the future may not be so far off in theory. As much of a fictional piece it may be, it contains many questions that aren't so far off from our own reality. A real thinker, definitely take the time to check it out!

More About the Author

Having grown up in Maine, Jeff Phillips moved to Chicago, IL in 2002 to pursue ambitions of becoming a method actor. In 2006 Jeff Phillips co-founded Three Leaves Productions with Daniel Mac Rae and set to work shooting a short film, Growing Out of Us, which Phillips co-wrote and acted in. They went on to shoot The Antimonk, Terra Incognita, and The Principles. They have also produced several plays in his old storefront apartment, The Manor, of which Phillips acted in dual roles as Walter Nordman and Jerry Thompson in Magnets and Paul in Division & Shame. Phillips and Mac Rae co-wrote The Drowning Exercises. The Manor eventually closed after it was shut down for not having a "performance license" during a suggested donation performance of The Drowning Exercises and the building's owners discovered their own zoning non-compliance for live/work spaces, leading to a spiral of odd challenges and the eventual dissolution of Three Leaves as a business. Jeff has also worked closely with filmmaker James N. Kienitz Wilkins, having acted in Nature Mature, Jeremy Goes to the Beach, and the upcoming Public Hearing. Phillips has been a regular contributor to the Seeding Meat publication series produced by XIII Pocket, a Chicago production group dedicated to original works, of which Phillips is a member of their artistic ensemble. He has also written for the Three Leaves publication, Bellows. He released his first book, Whiskey Pike in the summer of 2009 and his second book Turban Tan in the late fall of 2009. In August of 2010 he workshopped his play Bosto at the DCA Studio Theatre in Chicago as part of their Incubator Series for the development of new works.

Jeff Phillips is an active member of the Chicago comedy group, Wood Sugars Comedy in writing, producing and performing for film, live sketch shows, and for their variety show podcast Inside the Barrel.

He is currently revising a new novel and writing new short stories.
