5.0 out of 5 stars The best I've read
This book has everything for the bellydancer who is in for the long haul. It includes patterns of all the basic "uniforms" and how to adorn it. This book will save you hundreds of dollars in costume costs and they are gaurenteed to fit because you sew it, and can with little experience. There is also a good section on make-up and Henna and a huge research...

Enhanced version of the first book (Costuming from the Hip) and not as comprenhensive as the third (Bedlahs, Baubles and Beads) this book is a good beginner's guide to creating belly dance costumes. I was also excited to see the section on what certian symbols mean and the many drawings that show how many ways to wear one outfit.

This is a must have for any dancer.

4.0 out of 5 stars From Turban to Toe Ring, May 18, 2000

I found this book very inspirational! Having recently begun taking Belly Dance lessons, I find myself becoming more and more fascinated with the different styles of costuming. The book has provided me with a great source of ideas, and I notice that I am constantly following the advice it gives; to stay on the look out for various random pieces of jewlery or textiles that could be incorported into a costume. A wonderful creative resource.

A good volume for the novice costume maker.

This is a good book for any kind of costuming. I don't bellydance, but I do attend a lot of events and parties where costuming occurs. This spiral bound book is very helpful...patterns, ideas, and inspiration. I'd recommend it to anyone who costumes, and to anyone who sews their own clothes.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good starting point, July 20, 2002
This review is from: From Turban to Toe Ring (Spiral-bound)
This book is excellent for beginning tribal style costuming. There were two drawbacks to the book. It doesn't go into a lot of depth on many of the issues (I was disappointed that there wasn't more on coin bras), and assumes the reader has a decent knowledge of sewing. The nice parts of this book are a good explanation on various jewelry, mehndi, simple instructions on tassel making and the incredible bibliography. I'd definitely recommend it as a good starting point for developing your costume, but you may want to look elsewhere to fill in the details. Fortunately, you can get ideas where else to look from this book.

A very good source for people starting out in American Tribal Bellydance. Costume pieces , where to get them, how to adapt them and how to make your own are all here. Also background on the art form and it's history.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Informational, June 26, 2007

This review is from: From Turban to Toe Ring (Spiral-bound)
I have been looking for information on belly dance costume making. This one was the very helpful (especially for my personal needs). I found the information on making shi-shas and have been doing them on a table cloth for Tarot reading.

Anyone who has the ability to sew or conceptualize a costume will be able to structure their own outfit, with authenticity. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars New Edition - New Cover - New Binding - same Great Information!, May 26, 2011
By
Hello Gang,

Hi there! I'm the author, Dawn, and I just wanted to say hello, and tell you about this latest edition of "From Turban to Toe Ring." I am very happy to have the book back in print! This edition has been reformatted from the original in size, look and feel, but contains the same great content. The book is now 8" by 10" and has a full-color, glossy, wrap-around cover. We also eliminated the outdated resources page. It is my belief that the web is really the best and most up-to-date resource anyone can have. Any resource list printed in a book is so quickly out of date, we just removed it. But other than that, the book has the same great DIY information for designing ATS and ethno-fusion costuming.

The last edition had a ranking of 4.5 stars (Thank you readers!), and you can check out the previous reviews if you follow the product link back to the original page. But if you want to buy it - get your copy here. From Turban to Toe Ring And don't forget to check out my other recently reformatted book, Embellished Bras. Embellished Bras: Basic Techniques

Thanks for your support - I hope you enjoy my book!
