Book Description

There are four Turbatus Bones: HEALING, LIGHT, FORTUNE, and EVIL. Together, they give the power to travel through space and time. Apart, they can heal, reveal, destine, or doom anyone foolish enough to pick them up. And they are currently scattered across the fierce and fantastical realm of Tarkan.

When young orphan Jackson Walker discovers it is in his power to reunite the bones and find his parents, the quest begins. What Jackson doesn't anticipate is that the bones desperately want to be found by seemingly anyone except himself. When one of the bones falls into the hands of the cruelest man in all of Tarkan, the tyrant Mal, it will take all of Jackson's courage and cunning to retrieve it.

Luckily for Jackson, he is far from alone in his quest. His world is filled with quirky characters: Seven the oversized dog, Radio Flyer the undersized dragon, Jinda the distinctly disfigured herbalist, and the feisty and gorgeous serving-girl, Claire. All of whom are caught, with Jackson, in the perfect realm for fantasy--a world quaking with the turbulence of war, romance, and magic.

Written as the first installment of The Turbatus Bones series, The Bone of Evil is ultimately as much about adventure as it is about finding a place in this world (or the next).

Editorial Reviews

In Speight's debut fantasy, Jackson Walker uncovers a secret about his identity that has life-changing consequences.

Speight's novel opens as Commander Rang leads his elite group of soldiers to investigate an unbelievable killing spree. The country is ruled by Emperor Mal, whose reign is so viciously absolute that forgetting to bow means instant death. When Rang reaches the site of the killings, the passages that follow are chilling and tense: an old man "shirtless and covered in blood" squats in front of a pile of bodies and limbs, holding "a long white stick" in his right hand and "a severed forearm which he had clearly been gnawing on" in his left. The old man springs to life and starts stabbing soldiers who are suddenly unable to move, yet when he is felled by an arrow, he whispers "thank you" before dying. This all happens in the book's first seven pages. Subsequent chapters stay as short and briskly paced, but follow different characters from their points of view. In this way, Speight introduces readers to the book's true protagonist, Jackson, and about 15 other unique and well-rounded characters . . . Speight's unencumbered descriptions quickly lead from one event to the next as some characters search for the bones while others are embroiled in revolution. Weaving several story lines into one seamlessly interconnected whole, Speight pulls the strings together toward a climax that, even if slightly expected, feels like there was no other possible outcome.

A fast-paced novel that delivers a satisfying read.    ------   Kirkus

From the Author

It occurred to me one day that in every space/time travel story I'd ever read there was never any price to pay. I don't know about you, but each time I travel there is a cost. And as I mulled this over, I realized that anything we do, any action we take, results in some kind of toll--whether that price is physical, psychological, or financial. Nothing is free! With that in mind The Turbatus Bones series was born. I hope you enjoy it.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fine fun read January 23, 2012
This is what fantasy should be, fun and fast paced. The myriad characters and plot lines keep the pages turning and the reader up far beyond bed time. Where to next Mr. Speight?

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book from a new author March 10, 2012

I'm not usually a fan of fantasy adventure literature, and I thought this book was written for young adults; boy, was I wrong. It only took a few chapters and I was intrigued by the characters and the story. Soon I found myself unable to put it down. I admire the book's engaging writing style, vibrant descriptions, and compelling characters. I've recommended the book to others of all ages - young and not so young - and they have all enjoyed it. I'm looking forward to Speight's next book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gripping entertainment July 17, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
The trouble with the Turbatus Bones: Bone of Evil is that every page is such a tantalizing mix of adventure, fantasy, and intrigue that the reader cannot help but keep turning them to see what happens next. Before you know it, you're at the last one!

This story, the first of a series, transports us to the world of Jackson Walker, a boy embarking on an epic quest. It unnerves us with a mysterious set of magical bones and enchants us with an unforgettable cast of unusual characters, some of whom are struggling with epic challenges of their own. As their stories converge, they capture not just the imagination but the heart of the reader as well. And while on the surface this is a fun, suspenseful, satisfying yarn, there is an undercurrent of profound themes that are central to any society---real or imagined.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome adventure and fantasy novel! September 4, 2012
Scattered with stories of war, romance and magic, this novel is fast-paced and action-packed. Speight cleverly and swiftly weaves two story lines (searching for bones and a revolution) from one chapter to the next; making this a book I didn't want to put down. As an educator/administrator for 35 years, I would highly recommend this novel to young adults, particularly males, or anyone who enjoys reading fantasy novels. Speight should get busy on the next book in this series, as I expect he will have anxious readers wanting to see where the next adventure takes them!

5.0 out of 5 stars Something for everyone May 14, 2012
From the first chapter of The Turbatus Bones: Bone of evil, I was hooked! The story line is fascinating and takes some interesting twists and turns, making it hard to put the book down. The author does such a good job of "painting" the scenes - I almost felt as if I were there. I recommended the book to my 13 year old twins who enjoyed it just as much as I.
