Turbine Pilot's Flight Manual,
This review is from: The Turbine Pilot's Flight Manual (Paperback)
The book was probably written for those folks who will transition in the the turbine world, perhaps a King Air, Citation Jet, or even a heavy metal. The Turbine Pilot's Flight Manual is very easy to follow, a 5th grader can read and understand the materials enclosed, yet there is so much information. This book is a must reading for anyone who plan to transition from the piston world to the FL180 club.

A "must buy" book for early professional pilots,

This review is from: The Turbine Pilot's Flight Manual (Paperback)
This book is the consumate soup of all of the most important things you need to know before you go into ground school at a regional or major airline. It was written by airline pilots who still remember how overwhelmed they were when they sat through their first aircraft systems ground school at their respective airlines. I consider it mandatory reading before you consider setting foot in a flight simulator or airline ground school. Bravo!

GREAT BOOK!!!,

It was EASY to follow! A must read for all piston engine pilots BEFORE attending a ground school. I wish I had read this manual before my first ground school (which I scraped through by the skin of my teeth). Mr. Brown or Mr. Holt should have been the instructor! At times, I thought they could have added more information to the manual, but it would have made it more difficult to follow. Brown & Holt made it as easy as ABC!

Excellent. A-must for anybody who cares to learn turbine a/c,

Outstandingly good book. Provides wealth of information in an understandable way. The illustrations are clarity itself. Cannot praise this book enough. One page and 20 seconds of thought over it told me more than three days of trying with other sources. I'm sure it will help others, like it helped me. If you are new to the turbine a/c - this book is the wy to go.
My sincerest thanks to the authors!

This review is from: The Turbine Pilot's Flight Manual: Includes Aircraft Systems CD-ROM (Paperback)
I am currently transitioning from my previous career as an Army aviator flying helicopters to a career with the airlines. This book is a terrific aid in understanding the differences and realities of high speed and highly technical flight. The systems and advanced avionics sections are phenomenal! They are generalized in order to apply to as many aircraft as possible, but really explain well how they operate and how you will interact with them. My favorite part about the book is that the authors write it in an easy to understand manner. They do not write in an overly complicated technical manner, but rather at a level that a new or transitioning professional pilot can understand. They don't baby talk to you either. It's just right. Big Kudos and a must buy!!

Very well done. An excellent book and CD. The CD is helpful in understanding the jet or turboprop mechanical system. This book will help anyone wanting to learn to fly.

Great beginning turbine book,

This book is fantastic for someone that does not have any previous knowledge of turbine systems. Things are kept very simple. For a turbine pilot, you'll find this book is very basic, and lacking some of the finer detail you'll want/need. If you're looking to explore turbines for the first time, this is the book for you. Otherwise, I'd suggest looking for another book with more detail.

Picks up where FAA's Airplane flying handbook leaves you hanging.,

I bought this book after Max Trescott posed this question in his review on this book. Do you understand this description of the Cessna Caravan engine? It's a 'Free turbine, two-shaft engine utilizing a compressor section having three axial stages and one centrifugal stage, an annular reverse-flow combustion chamber, a one-stage compressor turbine, a one-stage power turbine, and a single exhaust.', and I honestly did not know what it meant. Not only that, but which shaft is n1 which is n2, the difference between Thrust, power and torque settings and who uses what. It looks at centrifugal versus axial flow in terms of reliability and compressability of the air, really great to know. The difference between the primary, fuel topping and overspeed governor on a Turbo prop. The electrical system was really insightful and it broke it down very nicely. How apu's work and how the pt6 (smaller turbine) uses an electric start where other bigger fans use air from the APU to start the engines. Read aviation books for years and never knew that. Air cycle vs vapor cycle. Had no idea, but now understand the pros and cons of each. I had always wanted to learn more about turbines and this book picks up right where the FAA's Airplane Flying Handbook left me hanging. I will go back and read the transitioning to jets section in the AFH again but looking it over I get it better now. I am only halfway through the book and it is already worth much more than the $5.41 I spent to buy it used. I consider it one of the best aviation book purchases in terms of having acquired understanding that I did not have before. I also bought the latest edition of Fly the Wing, which has info about the modern systems, that I have not seen anywhere else and look forward to writing that review. Thanks Max Trescott, I bought this book because of the review you wrote which helped me realize this book was for me. I hope readers of this review say "yeah that is stuff I don't know enough about" and realize that this book is for them.

A "must read" BEFORE ground school for your first turbojet or turboprop,
By
This review is from: The Turbine Pilot's Flight Manual (Paperback)
I've flown for 30 years, always in pistons. Recently I went to Flight Safety for a week of training on the Cessna Caravan. My background is in electrical engineering, not engines, so I knew I desperately needed some understanding of turboprop engines before I arrived. Not only did I learn the details of the engines, I learned about how some things on the electrical side are done differently than I had thought. I wrote about the week at Flight Safety on my blog at http://www.maxtrescott.com/max_trescott_on_general_a/2008/11/cessna-208b-caravan-training-work-but-fun.html#more
Here's a quote directly from that posting: "Getting Greg's book was a good choice and I recommend it to anyone stepping up to turbine and jet aircraft for the first time. While manipulating the controls of these aircraft will be familiar to anyone who's flown a small plane, the systems, particularly the engines, are significantly different. The beauty of reading his book is that I actually understood the sentence describing the engine in the Caravan's POH: 'Free turbine, two-shaft engine utilizing a compressor section having three axial stages and one centrifugal stage, an annular reverse-flow combustion chamber, a one-stage compressor turbine, a one-stage power turbine, and a single exhaust.'" by Max Trescott, 2008 National CFI of the Year
