I bought this Turbotax Basic Download anyway, despite the bad reviews. I read in some other reviews that Basic is all you need if you have a personal business and need a Schedule C, or itemize deductions. Turbotax tries to rip people off on an upsale to Deluxe and Home and Business. I buy a lot of stuff from Amazon. They have always made things right if something is wrong with a purchase. $22 was not too big a gamble for their track record with me. The download and install took all of three minutes. I run on Verizon Fios and have Vista on a machine that scores all 5.9s. I use Turbotax every year. It does a nice job. My taxes aren't real complicated, and I could do them manually, but I bet Turbotax pays for itself, no matter what I pay for it, mainly because there will be something I would have missed. Basic didn't complain about importing my Turbotax files from 2007, even though I used Deluxe last year, will never do that again. Its the nuttiest thing. The Basic software will try to upsell you when it sees that you need to itemize deductions. When you say no thanks, it does a perfect job of walking you through your itemized deductions. Then it will try to upsell you when you say you have your own small business. When you say no thanks, it will do everything you need to handle your small business, inventory, home office, autos and any other assets. This is a good deal. Buy it.

I attempted to use the online version of Turbotax Basic, but the online version automatically performs a "stealth" upgrade to the Deluxe version whenever you import last year's tax data and enter K-1 data. I do my own K-1s, and it's simple data entry that can easily be done with the Basic version (although Intuit tries to relentlessly upsell you to premium versions). Those greedy mofos at Intuit would also have you believe you need Deluxe software to claim a simple mortgage interest deduction, when you don't!!

So rather than pay for an unwanted stealth upgrade to the Deluxe online version, I decided to download the Basic version from Amazon.

Be aware that this product is crazily mispriced here on Amazon. They want to charge 33% more for DOWNLOADED software versus the exact same software on a CD-ROM media with free shipping. BUYER BEWARE!!! I think Amazon and Intuit must have drunk the same kool-aid to think that consumers won't notice these pricing shenanigans.

It's not the $8 price difference that matters, it's the PRINCIPLE!!

Turbo tax gave me a return of around $7500 but the IRS sent a check for 1200 less. According to the letter from the IRS all the numbers input matched up, but the computation by turbo tax was way off mark... Have used this program for over 10 years, but never again. If you've used it before, you'll find the program is also not as user friendly and streamlined as previous versions

WARNING:

Amazon requires you to install THEIR "special downloading software" in order to download the software you purchase. If you do not do so, you can not downoad the software.

They DO NOT tell you that you HAVE TO download and install Amazon's special downloading software -- until AFTER you have purchased the software.

And like the person above the only way to ATTEMPT to get a refund is to send an email and hope they respond.

I ordered this product and the software is stuck on my desk-top and will not finish downloading. Try and talk to someone at Amazon, not going to happen. I want to cancel my order but there is no way to do this. What a crock.
